The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Live in Today for Yesterday is Gone and Tomorrow Never Comes 93

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Part of the meaning of life, to be happy, is to know when to live and keep to that schedule. A great percentage, perhaps 99%, of humanity have this same dilemma. One reader of this blog asked the question, how do I live today’s life? It is good question. It is a radical question.

The remainder of the text is found immediately below this video pane.

It is a good and radical question because so many ask it. My wife and I just got a bill for medical work. Her first reaction was, “How are we going to pay it?” It is a natural question. A real question. One everyone asks who has limited funds. That makes about 99% of us, then, doesn’t it. We just spent some money yesterday that might have helped with this bill. But that money is gone, used in good faith. It cannot be returned, as such. The companion question, then, always is, how will we do this in the future? The two questions are sides of the same coin. They concern themselves with tomorrow and yesterday.

Now, do not get me wrong. All of us need to be spend responsibly and plan for the possibility of a future. But we do not and cannot live in either place, neither past nor future. We live and can only live in the here and now. (You have heard that before, I am sure. But it is a truth that never wears out if taken seriously.)

So, we have got to do three things:

1. Yesterday is gone, learn its lessons and then forget it. There is nothing really that we can do about it. What is done, is done. To worry over what happened or what we did yesterday is a fool’s errand. Someday quantum physics may teach us to travel to the past and change things, reboot. But until that time comes, we have only today.

2. Do not sweat tomorrow, it never comes. Beyond reasonable planning for possibilities, chasing tomorrow and the “brighter day” you promise yourself it must be, it is another dupe’s gig. This is not being pessimistic. It is being realistic. We can “intention” all we want for tomorrow, but when tomorrow comes, it is today and we need to live in it. Don’t ever give up your “intentioning” but realize that you live in this moment only.

3. Make the best of today. If a bill comes that was unexpected, think about what you have in this moment. In this moment you cannot pay the bill. So, why worry about it? I am not asking you to be cavalier about your bills. I am saying, can you write a check today for the full amount? No. I can’t either. What are we to do? The best we can in this moment. Which is to do a little planning as to how it will be paid. Check with the creditor to see if it can be paid in installments. (I did, it can.) Then go on with what you can do today.

Today you cannot pay the bill in full. Drop the worry, then. Could you have prevented the bill from or through the past? No, of course not. Then don’t obsess over what caused the bill. The bill is, that’s all. Today can only be informed by yesterday, nothing more. Go on with what you can do today. Keep to that schedule. That is part of the meaning of life, to be happy; go on with what you can do today .
