The Mean of Life: To be Happy and All Deserve Happiness

All Deserve Happiness

The meaning of life, to be happy, is available to all. Many times while observing the conversations on Twitter, I come across people who say they do not deserve happiness. By fuzzy logic I say, we all deserve happiness or none of us does.

Can you really say that some one does not deserves happiness? (Watch out, now, I switched directions while you weren’t looking.) Can anyone in their right mind say that some other person does not deserve happiness? No. No one can say that, because no one knows the exact circumstances that led that person to where he or she is right now. Sure, sure, we may dislike the person, terribly dislike them, even hate them. But any reasonable person will know that you cannot say the other does not deserve happiness.

Why can’t that be said? Because then the same may be said about you. For example, I know that I have psychological enemies. There are people who do not like me or what I say. Some will be vehemently opposed. But just because they dislike me does not mean they can claim that I do not deserve happiness. Moreover, they cannot keep me from being happy on the inside, at the core of my spirit, or being. This is where happiness actually and truly resides.

Look at Nelson Mandela: 27 years imprisoned by an opposing government. Yet, when freed from prison he lead a movement of reconciliation. No one is capable of such magnanimity without happiness at the core of their being. An oppressive government sought to rob him of his happiness by imprisonment. That robbery never took place; Mandela kept it in his core.

So all of us deserve happiness because we cannot say that so-and-so does not deserve happiness.

I know, I know, this is a long road for a short trip. But I cannot say that even the worst criminal does not deserve happiness at the core of his or her life. Oh, yes, do not mistake me, they must be held accountable for their crime. Due punishment must be meted out under the laws of the land. (Lest anyone wonder, I am NOT speaking about Nelson Mandela here.) But if this criminal will look inside and connect with The Cosmic Consciousness, and through that connection, find happiness, I cannot deny it to them. First, I do not have such power. Second, I am not the one who grants happiness, The Cosmic Consciousness does.

I believe every sentient being deserves happiness. Happiness of the sort that comes through the connection to and with The Cosmic Consciousness. Bliss. All deserve happiness or none do. The meaning of life is happiness. Grant to yourself that deservedness. Grant to everyone else the same.

The Meaning of Life and Good and Evil

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The Meaning of Life and Good and EvilI was looking at the tweets from Twitter having something to do with the meaning of life.  Many dozens of folks mention or ask the direct question, “What is the meaning of life?” everyday on Twitter.

There are events and circumstances in life that we regard as good or evil. Many philosophers and gurus want us to consider all events as neither good nor bad. They insist that all events are neutral and we give them their connotation.

But, I think, for the average person this is a difficult task. When one is caught in the throws of what most everyone would call evil, persons cringe. In other words, how to help these folks as they are on their way to enlightenment. We are not all at the same level of insight.

As we work our way deeper into the Core of our beings, the Center where all is calm, how shall we deal with evil? Good, of course, is simply accepted and rejoiced in. But what of evil? Here is an answer.

In a Universe that is free, what some call bad things will happen. What some people call bad people will happen. Events or people choose to think that they must do what others call evil. Greatest example, perhaps: Adolf Hitler. He developed a plan to make certain persons superior to all others. He evolved a design that would eliminate those he saw as a problem. The point is, he believed he was correct. He found people who agreed with him. They set the plans in motion. At first he couldn’t be stopped.

It’s not that the Universe turned a blind-eye, by the way. There is operative in the Universe a mechanism called Karma. Karma basically means that what one does sets up a momentum that will flow back upon you. This is called, sometimes, “consequences.” Whatever one does, there are consequences.

When something bad is happening in your life, as you see it, that’s the very time you need to consider karma for both yourself and everyone and everything involved in the event. The first thing you need to realize is that there will be consequences for whoever perpetrated this negative upon you.

Then you need to try to make sure you do not retaliate in kind. You want your karma to be good. Defend yourself, for sure. Protect your life and property, if need be. Protect the lives of your loved ones, absolutely. But do not be the cause of evil yourself. (Defending your life, even if it results in the death of the one attacking you, is not evil, in my view.)

Deal with evil in the best way you can. Try to preserve your own good karma. (For some this answer will seem very simplistic. Not enough meat on the bones. That may well be true, but not everyone is at the same level of grace.) Small steps first. Till that day when you can see all events as neutral and you know yourself free to choose how to label them.

When you uphold your own good karma, you are reaffirming the meaning of life, which is to be happy.
