The Meaning of Life and False Hopelessness – Part Two

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A Smiling Face Comes from a Smiling HeartThe meaning of life is contained in the wings of a butterfly. Somewhere in South America a beautiful butterfly flutters its wings to go from one flower to the next. It flits about gaining its sustenance. The butterfly, just being itself, from its essence, its being, flies from one blossom to another seeking food. But in the course of flicking its wings, those wing-movements set up a vortex of minute power. Power enough, mind you, to propel the butterfly around the garden. So, just being what it is, the wing-vortexes of that butterfly set in motion the great winds of a hurricane. (This has been demonstrated theoretically.) In other words, one small gesture on the part of the butterfly fixed one the greatest forces in nature there is.

You, too, from who you are really, on the inside, put into motion all kinds of events that would not have happened had you not. Follow me now. You move your hand through the air. It seem a meaningless gesture. But you have set molecules of air in motion that would not have been had you not gestured thus. Perhaps you began a cool breeze that comforted the brow of sweating road worker. He surely needed that breeze at the precise moment.

Where the meaning of life is to be happy, think what positive forces you set in motion each time you do something from your positive outlook. When you are happy inside by being in connection to the Great Is, you beam your happiness to the world outside of you.

A smiling face comes from a smiling heart.

So, I declare to you, from this perspective anyway, that there is no hopelessness. You, individually, by yourself, can do something to affect real change in your world. You can begin with a smile beamed at all possible persons in all possible circumstances. (Certainly, a smile is not appropriate in every situation. That would be looney.) But in all possible circumstances. Therefore, you cannot be caught in false hopelessness. Because there is always something you can do.

The smallest kindness can set the whole world toward positive change. A random act of philanthropy can change the world. It is only when you perceive yourself as helpless in every circumstance, that you are. When you sense yourself as free to be able to affect a change, no matter how small, that you may indeed change the world. Just think of the butterfly in South American.

The Meaning of Life and False Hopelessness

You Can't Do A Thing ABout ItIn honor of the coming new year – 2010 – I want to talk about the meaning of life and false hopelessness, a departure from my usual subjects.

I was sitting in the eye doctor’s office recently waiting for my eyes to dilate and be examined by the doctor after having laser surgery two weeks prior. I was practicing concentrating, to be a better meditator. What better place to practice concentration than a noisy, conversation-filled, doctor’s waiting room.

Three people somewhat older than me were discussing what they believed was the sad state of affairs that the country was in. I tuned into this conversation to hear what they had to say. One of the ladies (there were two ladies and a gentleman in conversation) said, after someone had made a derogatory remark about the country, “And there’s not one thing you can about it.”

I couldn’t stand any longer. I spoke up and said, “You lived through the Viet Nam era. You know that you can change things if you want to you. You have the vote.” (Yes, I rudely interrupted someone else’s conversation.)

That led to a heated discussion for just a few minutes between the four of us. I am really sick and tired of people saying they can do not nothing about what’s happening in their world. A son-in-law says that Social Security won’t be there when he retires. He’s in his late 40s. I get hot and say, “Come on. You have the vote. Your generation (baby-boomers) can do whatever you like, including keeping Social Security.”

What is this False Hopelessness that some people want to project? Sure it sometimes seems overwhelming, like there is nothing we can do as individuals. But I know, repeat, I know it is not true. I lived through Viet Nam. (No, I did not have the privilege of serving in the military. All due respect.) I saw what the country did. It change from pro-war in Viet Nam to anti-war in Viet Nam. The time span was not that great. In a matter of several years, did the change take place. I was in graduate school when a riot against the war broke out on campus and I still remember the smell of teargas.

Then I challenged myself to see how many individuals I could think of or look-up using the Internet who changed the world. I found over 400 hundred individuals who could be said to have changed the world by themselves.

Over 400.

I challenge you to do you own thinking and/or research about what individuals could be said to have changed the world by themselves. Of course, opinions on what constitutes changing the world will vary.

But do not give in to False Hopelessness. We, in our western democracies, at least, have the opportunity, by ourselves, if need be, to change the world.

And this has to do with the meaning of life how? When you find the Eternal Happiness, the Ever-Expanding Bliss, that is within you via connection to the Cosmic Consciousness, you never feel yourself helpless. You know you have unlimited resources at hand, at Spirit, to do what you really want to do. Because you have the Hopeful Base of the Cosmic Consciousness as your foundation, there is nothing you cannot do, when you really want to do. False hopelessness and true, real happiness, the meaning of life, are not found in the same conscious being – you.
