“Um, I want to feel happy, Dr. Bob. But I can’t,” he said.

As gently as I could I said, “What do you mean, you can’t?”

At the beginning, you must understand that you can change your mind. You can literally rewire your mind so that what you want is readily apparent to you.

When you realize that you can change your mind, then you can change your life.

Pete had made an appointment to meet with me a week before. He arrived in his usual disheveled manner. Pete was a very organized guy except when it came to his appearance.

The rest of the text for this post follows immediately after this video pane:

To look at him it would seem that he never had a clue. But when you got to know him, you discovered he was a sharp as a tack.

We exchanged the usual pleasantries. Then I asked, “What’s up, Pete?”

“Um, I want to feel happy, Dr. Bob. But I can’t,” he said.

As gently as I could I said, “What do you mean, you can’t?”

“The more I try, the worse it seems to get.”

If you looked at Pete’s tousled appearance you might assume that he was stating the obvious. He looked as if he could not organize a table setting, let alone organize his mind. Don’t get me wrong here. Pete was an amazing person other than the state of his clothing. The importance of dressing neatly just wasn’t important to him.

“But Pete, you are so very organized in almost everything else you do. You are a successful business man, here in the local economy. From what everyone can see, your family is healthy and happy.”

Pete said, “All that is true, Dr. Bob. But appearances can be deceiving. Yes, my business goes very well. Added two more employees just last week. Family life is well. Oldest girl graduates from highschool this coming June. But I cannot get my mind to accept these and also to let me be happy.”

There it was – the clue. Pete had just said he could not get his mind to accept and let him be happy. Something was blocking his way to happiness.

“What’s it like when you try to meditate and make connection with The All There Is?” I asked.

“I have a good connection with the Cosmic Consciousness, I think. But almost immediately after a meditation session, I begin to hear ideas in my mind. The ideas, before you ask,” he said with a smile, “say to me that I don’t deserve happiness.”

This kind of problem is much more common than you might think. Many people have great difficulty in allowing themselves to be happy.

“All right, let’s find out where you acquired this blockage to happiness. Where do you think these ideas against happiness come from?” I asked.

“I have thought about that,” said Pete. “I can remember my grandmother, who lived with us all the time I was growing up, until my junior year in high school, when she went to a nursing home, saying over and over again, no one deserves happiness. She would say you have to earn happiness.”

“And you feel that you haven’t done enough to have earned happiness?” I asked Pete.

“No. I can never seem to convince myself that I have earned it yet.”

“Well, there you have it. Your brain is literally wired with that idea your grandmother gave you. And no one in the family ever argued with her about it. Did they?”

“No, they didn’t. What are you getting at, Dr. Bob?”

“Just this. Happiness is not earned. It is a given. When you make deep and lasting connection with The Source of All There Is, you find total acceptance. In that total acceptance is meaning and happiness.

“But your grandmother taught you that you have to earn happiness. What you have, in effect, is a brain-culture that you were always fighting against. Never winning. The culture said that you have to earn happiness. You believed it. You believe it still.”

“How do I get out of that mind-culture?” Pete asked.

“First, you become aware of it. You just have. Then, second, you work over time to change the culture of your mind. You rewire, through repetition, your mind.

“How long will it take? I don’t know. I know it is different for each person. I know also that it can be done. You believe it can be done and it will be. Your mind will change.”

“How do I rewire my mind?”

“Affirmation after affirmation. Like – Happiness is a given by The Source of All There Is. Or, I deserve happiness because The Source of All There Is has given it to me. Or something else that you devise.”

“That simple, Dr. Bob?”

“Yes, that simple. But the effort may take a while. You have to commit to it.”

Pete said, “I want to be happy. I want my mind-culture to change. I’ll work at it.”

We made an appointment for six months later, with the idea that if he needed it, Pete could, of course, come visit with me at any appointed time.

Six months later Pete was visibly changed. No, he was still his disheveled self. But his face had changed. He declared he had a different mind-culture now.

If you are not as happy as you wish to be, look inside to see if there is some culture of belief or attitude that keeps you from being as happy as you wish to be. If so, change it. You can do it. Start now.

All of us have questions about life, myself, yourself, life after death, meaning. So I thought I would pose seven questions and give my answers to those questions and see if you care to resonate with those questions and answers.

You may not agree. That’s fine. What I hope this article will do is stimulate interior conversation within yourself. Maybe even external communication with relatives and friends. All this so that you can come to your own conclusion, your own answers. Thereby I believe you will generate for yourself a better life. Here goes.

The remainder of the text for this post is immediately following this video pane:

1. Do I have a soul? Yes, I believe you have a soul. Some will call it spirit. Perhaps it has many others names. Your soul is the really real part of who you are.

2. What is a soul? There seems to be some part of every human being that is beyond the physical body. The physical body is, after all, something of a bio-machine. That is, it is fueled, runs and produces exhaust. It only carries around the soul for the length of its days.

It is this soul that truly is you. I believe it is eternal, reincarnating into physical bodies over, perhaps, vast amounts of time as we reckon time. The soul is more than consciousness though consciousness is how we interact with the Grand Consciousness of the Universe. Your soul is the spiritual connection you have with the Universe.

3. Am I more than my mind? Yes, you are mind, body, soul (spirit). However, do not fall into the trap that so many have. While you are in your physical body you do not have three separate parts of mind, body, spirit. You are one in a unity that includes three ways of perceiving your present reality.

Your mind is affected by your body and soul. Your mind is part of the great Cosmic Mind that knows all things and is experiencing all things through you and all. Let me put it this way: you are more than your brain. It has been shown that your electromagnetic field extends to about 7 or 8 feet in all directions. It may be through this field that you make contact with the Great Mind.

In that Great Mind is stored all knowledge. This knowledge is available to you and to all humans. It just needs to be remembered. My point here is, your mind stretches the length and breadth of the Universe.

4. Am I more than my body? I think I have begun to answer this question in the previous answer. For example, your heart is made up of 60% to 65% neural cells. The physical of you is connected the mental of you. The mental of you is connected to the spiritual of you. Never believe for one moment that you are three separate parts. You are a unity conveniently ascribed parts for better understanding.

The body dies, but the soul does not. It is transmigrated through countless bodies until you have experienced all you wish and reached the level of enlightenment meant for you to attain. So, yes, you are more than your body.

5. Am I more than the sum of my parts? First, get rid of the notion that you are parts. While in this earthly plane you are a singularity.

But beyond that, you are more than the sum of your parts. Take an athlete who wishes to win a race. You train your body. But you also use your mind by visualizing finishing first. Then there is the fuel you have and can use that stems from your connection and resonance with all of life through your soul.

Leaving out any one of these aspects of yourself can lead to finishing second instead of first. Put them altogether and you have an entity that is greater than the sum your “parts.”

6. Is there life beyond life? At least two of the great religions of the world, Islam and Christianity, and a great philosophy, Buddhism, believe there is more to life than these few short years on earth.

Farther than religion though, we have studies such as the ones made by those who study Near Death Experiences and Regression of Souls, who unequivocally say there is life beyond life.

I believe so as well. There is just too much evidence built up over thousands of years testifying to the idea that there is life after life to ignore it.

It is said that the Buddha, having come to enlightenment, could look back over 100,000 lives. It seems that in terms we can just about grasp, we, that is our souls, live forever.

7. For what purpose do I live? You live to experience. A simple statement that covers so much. The Great Consciousness is just that – pure consciousness. As such it cannot experience.

But it wishes to know what Its thoughts would be like if they could be lived out. So we have taken residence in physical bodies to experience. It is in what we perceive as physical that we can experience.

But you get a great deal out of experiencing, do you not? Indeed, your whole life, good and bad and everything along that continuum, is based in and on experiencing. The Great Consciousness does not force you to experience anything on Its behalf.

You choose your own experiences. We, humans, are the choice makers. You have a great and joyous task set in front of you. That is to gain the most experience you can allow yourself to have. By the way, the more positive your experience is, the more you actually get out of it.

There you have it, seven questions asked and answered. Discuss them within yourself. Discuss them with family and friends. If these answers do not please you, develop questions and answers that do. That’s what you are here for. Begin now.

Do you feel like you have been mentally or spiritually poisoned? Here are three of those poisons to avoid.

Smog poisons our air. Using waterways as sewage disposals contaminates our drinking water. Many are the examples of an adulterated world. We need to be mindful, too, of the contaminates that corrupt our minds and spirits. Here are three to avoid at any cost.

The remainder of the text is found immediately after the video pane.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekZ1j-aekck

Remember, please, comments are always welcome.

First, hatred is a significant poison. When you develop this emotion within yourself, you have invited corruption into your life. It will eat you alive. Ordinary steel will rust to dust if not tended to. Hatred is like that rust. It is a blight upon you soul and mind. It will consume you as you spend more and more energy maintaining the idea of hating someone.

This does mean that you need forget the incident that caused you to begin to hate. That would be foolish. You need to protect your mind and spirit from persons who would only cause you harm. Remembering the episode and trying to avoid the person who cultivated hatred within you will serve you well.

Give up the hatred. Do not hold a grudge. Eliminate that corruption from your mind-spirit.
Do you see the difference between remembering and hating? Protect yourself by remembering the problem; but do not allow yourself the abomination of hatred.

Second, give up attachment to all things and people. Attachment is one of the main causes of suffering in your life. All things pass way. Sorry to be so blunt. That is the truth, however. When you set yourself up to adhere to things and people, you will suffer.

This does not mean that you cannot love someone. It does mean that you need to remember that that person will be gone from your life, someday. Or, if you build your whole life around a thing, say a vintage auto in fantastic shape, and someone steals the car, your whole world would collapse. Even attachment to your own life can exacerbate your personal suffering.

I know that it is very difficult not to hold on to someone or something. We sometimes think these things or people are the anchors of our lives. That without them, we would be adrift on an angry sea. However, when you set aside all attachments, you will find the anchor of yourself, in this moment. In other words, you will have eliminated another poison from your life.

Third, ignorance is an insidious contamination of your mind-spirit. This does not mean that you must know everything. That is impossible in any case. But take elections as an example.

During election season we see all kinds of ads on television, through the mail and even via prerecorded telephone calls. As time wears on, these ads seem to be more and more negative. To keep the poison of ignorance away from your life, you will need to find out the truth behind those ads. You may need to take action in order to be an informed voter.

You do that in many ways, not the least of which is to go the candidate’s website, if they have one. Read there what the candidate really stands for. In other words, do not take political campaign ads as gospel truth. Find out what is really going on.

Of course, this method of leading yourself out of ignorance is a good idea for any area of life. Have you a medical condition, for example? Instead of fearing this disease, you can confront it far more effectively when you know what you are dealing with. Many avenues of knowledge are open to you in these days of the Information Age. Discover what you can to help fight back against the disease that haunts you.

There you have three of the mind-spirit poisons to avoid: hatred, attachment and ignorance. When you find any of these in your life, strive for the antitoxin. You will find yourself in a better situation very quickly.
