Sharing the Meaning of Life from "This" Perspective

Evolution of Soul In Regards to Your Meaning and Happiness

It is easy to see the evolution of your body, from birth through the ages and stages of life and then toward death. It is not so easy to observe the evolution of your soul.

Evolution Takes Time

We are accustomed to thinking of evolution in the tens of millions of years. Think dinosaurs. We are not accustomed to thinking of our own evolution in those time terms. But it does take time.

The remainder of the text follows immediately after this video pane:

You need to give yourself that time. Most people want themselves to be able to change with the snap of fingers. Whereas this is possible, it is not the usual case. You have got to give yourself time to evolve.

Evolution Takes Effort

The snapping of fingers is easy. If I were to tell you that evolving within your soul was easy, I would be irresponsible and stupid. You would see right through me. You know, from your own experiences, that change does not always come easily.

Allow yourself the idea that change within yourself is going to take effort. If at first you don’t get it, allow yourself the luxury of knowing it takes continued effort. Everything new may well feel awkward at first.

Allow the Thought of Reincarnation

I believe your soul, and mine, transmigrate from human body to human body. We may have many hundreds or even thousands of rebirths into “new” bodies. We are souls traveling through what we call time. Your soul is eternal and it inhabits for a time a body that you use to “get around.”

In each new incarnation you experience and grow. You progress toward enlightenment. This progressive activity is hardwired, I believe, into you. You experience and thereby you build up growth toward enlightenment.

Meaning of Life

One of the most important things you can experience is the meaning of life. As you are in touch with the Great Evolver, you see that you are totally accepted, just as you are. The Great Evolver is Enlightenment. That Evolver offers you the same enlightenment.

But most resist because they feel they are unworthy of both the Great Evolver and enlightenment. They first need to come to see that they are accepted and affirmed as they are.

This so that all experiences can be seen and felt as accepted. No experience is discounted.

Happiness Is the Meaning of Life

When you know acceptance, you know happiness. There is no greater feeling than to know you are totally, unconditionally welcomed as you are right now. This welcoming is in constant flow. This means you are never not welcomed.

From this welcome you feel deep abiding happiness. You feel this because you decide to accept your acceptance. Yes, it is a decision. There is, of course, an emotional component to it. But at base, you decide you are happy because you are accepted – a rational decision.

Happier and Happier

In a manner of speaking, then, as you evolve through toward enlightenment, you become happier and happier. Your soul evolves from one plane of enlightened existence to another. You grow through your life experiences until you are completely enlightened – completely happy.

Begin This Evolution Now

Certainly you have been evolving as you progressed through your incarnations in the past. But you probably didn’t realize what you were doing. Now you have the opportunity to consciously evolve. You have control. Grow. Experience. Know meaning. Be happy. Evolve. Now.

What Makes You So Happy? I Have Connections

Rico came through my office door exclaiming, “What makes you so happy, Dr. Bob?” Then he sat down.

He was a little angry. I had something he wanted but couldn’t figure out how to get.

I smiled and said, “I’ve got connections.”

The remainder of the the text for this post continues immediately after this video pane:

Rico was in his mid-thirties. Though Rico is not his real name, he is Hispanic American. He had a good job and a very nice family. He and his family had been attending our caring community for over three years.

Rico said, “I want those same connections.” He spoke those words as if I were keeping something from him.

“Are you willing to work at them? They don’t come easy, although they are cheap.”

“You know I can work hard.”

“O.K. Here are the three of them: 1. A Connection with The Source of All There Is. 2. A connection with yourself. 3. A connection with others.”

He wasn’t expecting those. But then he leaned forward in his chair just a little, indicating his eagerness.

First, I began to explain, comes a connection with The Source of All There Is. Some call this Source God, but I often find that there is too much harmful baggage to unpack and discard with this word “God.” So I use a less familiar term – The Source of All There Is.

You get in touch with this Source through meditation or prayer. I stick closer to meditation as prayer also can have negative connotations for many folks. I told Rico he needed to develop a meditative life using one of the many forms of meditation.

What would that do for him? This connection would help him find the meaning of his life, which, I believe, is to be happy. You find happiness when you come to understand that The Source accepts you just as you are. Full acceptance and acceptance of your acceptance equals happiness.

You choose to be happy knowing you are accepted. Happiness here is defined as an excellent sense of well-being. Joy, on the other hand, is an emotion that erupts from external events. Happiness is a choice to feel a sense of well-being no matter what is happening in your external world.

This sense of well-being is developed and perpetuated through a connection with The Source of All There Is.

But you do not finished there. You go on to accept yourself just as you are. Yes, we can all improve. But we start just where we are right now. Rich or poor or in between; tall, short or medium; thin or heavy or in between; educated or not; family or single; all these, any of these is just the way you are right now. Accept that.

In other words, make a genuine affirming connection with yourself. Be aware of who you really are. As you are totally and unconditionally accepted by The Source, there is no need to look at yourself as anything else. No matter what you have done or not done, been or not been, said or not said, you affirm yourself just as you are.

Many people find themselves separated from themselves because they feel they are not as perfect as they are supposed to be. Nonsense. You are perfect just the way you are. Yes, improvements may need to be made. But as you are, right now, you are perfectly human.

These two: acceptance from The Source and affirmation of self, lead to a connection with others. Why? You need to express your acceptance and affirmation in the world around you as you interact with others.

Now that you know you are accepted by The Source and you have affirmed yourself, you can see that all others are in the same boat as you whether they realize it or not.

They need to know they are accepted by The Source. They need to know they can affirm themselves just as they are. One of the ways they can discover these is through your actions and words.

How? When you show compassion for others, you have demonstrated acceptance and affirmation. How many people need affirmation and acceptance? That’s right – everyone. You can be one of the instruments to help others. You share your happiness.

When you share it you reinforce happiness within yourself. You reinforce your connection to The Source. You reinforce your self-connection. You reinforce your connection with others as they respond positiviely to your kindness and compassion.

Rico said, “I can do that. I’ll start with the next person I meet.” We parted then but as I saw Rico frequently, he did seem much happier than before we talked together.

You can make these three connections as well. Start now.

Happiness Is A Revolutionary Act

Actually choosing to be happy is a revolutionary act. Though happiness remains one of the most popular goals among those polled, it is not yet in the mainstream.

It is not in the mainstream because people, by and large, do not know that happiness is not produced from material things, nothing wrong with material things per se. But many folks believe that if they have everything they want, they will be happy.

When they have everything they want, they discover happiness has not been acquired. They may even feel less satisfied now that the achievement of things is accomplished.

The remainder of the text of this post follows immediately after this video pane:

So, to capture and keep happiness is going against the mainstream; it is a revolutionary act.

It is also radical because you have to do something different to find and maintain happiness. You need to develop a meditative-life. (Some folks will want to call this a prayer-life. That’s fine.)

You have to take the time to plan and execute a daily regime of meditation. It need not be a long period of time. Anywhere from ten to thirty minutes, whatever suits, will be first class.

Does not need to be long nor does it need to be arduous. You can even imagine yourself sitting besides a great, blue mountain lake. Into that lake you drop all of your cares, troubles, concerns, joy, hopes, needs, wants, and watch as they sink out of insight, as if absorb by that lake.

Then you simply, in your imagination, drink in the pine smells around that lake and the beauty of the landscape and sky nearby that lake.

Do this lake-vision exercise in meditation once a day for a week and I bet you will feel much happier. You have detached yourself from so much of your life that you will be lighter in spirit.

But to be lighter in spirit is a rebellious act. To carry self-imposed burdens is the norm. This is not to say that there are no real burdens to carry. There are. But so many folks create and construct their own burdens when they could just as easily mentally set them aside and walk free.

To walk free is to know that The Source is totally accepting of you just as you are. That’s where happiness arrives. When you discover that the meaning of life is happiness through total and unconditional acceptance from The Source, you will have joined the revolution.

You will have joined the revolution of those who choose to be happy. Yes, happiness is a choice which involves accepting your unconditional approval from The Source.

This is sometimes difficult to understand. Joy is an emotion that spontaneously washes over you like a cooling wave during a very hot day at the beach.

Happiness is a choice – a way of viewing your life and your world. Joy is spontaneous; happiness means deciding to respond to life in a certain way. Happiness is not spontaneous as such, rather it is a decision and it is a revolutionary decision.

You have heard of the idea of whether the glass is half full or half empty. How you see that glass of water is up to you. You decide. If you have previously decided one way, you can change your mind and decide the opposite way.

Did you get that? You can change your mind. When you have found happiness as the meaning of life, you choose to follow your intuition and be happy. You are happy, you discover, because you have found total acceptance in The Source of All There Is.

In these actions of mind and spirit your have lifted yourself out of the workaday into the extraordinary, the revolutionary, way of being in the world – happy.

Why is this revolutionary? You need look no further than the vast majority of your family, friends and acquaintances. You will see that they are unhappy and complaining perhaps 90% of the time.

But you have chosen to be different. You have chosen to find the meaning of life, which is to be happy, by accepting your acceptance. In reveling in that acceptance you know the emotion of joy, but you know the decision of happiness.

Make sure you are a part of this radical, revolutionary spirit-action. Be happy.
