Sharing the Meaning of Life from "This" Perspective

After You Have the Meaning of Life, Which Is To Be Happy, What Do You Do With It? Five Answers

Congratulations! You have found meaning in life, which is to be happy. Now what do you do?

Here are five questions and five answers to this dilemma.

1. Question: How do I know that I have meaning and happiness?

The rest of the text for this post is right after this video pane:

Answer: When you feel yourself as completely accepted and loved by the Universe. You are unconditionally accepted. No matter what you do or do not do, you are consented to. There is no greater happiness than knowing you are totally, entirely accepted.

You know also that everyone else can find meaning in life and happiness. Because you have experienced it yourself, you know that others can have the same. When you start sharing what you have discovered with others, and they discover it for themselves, you reinforce your own meaning and happiness.

The pleasant circle continues – round and round.

2. Question: What do I really want?

Answer: Something meaningful to do. You are the one who determines what you are to do. No one, not even God, dictates what you will do with your life. Or what you want to do with your life. You work it out for yourself.  You feel fulfilled.

Meaning is the motivation of every life. Those who feel they have no meaning are far less motivated than those who feel they have meaning. You do have meaning, meaning as consequential or as inconsequential as you make it.

I believe everyone can find something meaningful to do. Just look.

3. Question: What is the purpose of your life?

Answer: Experience. You want your life to have some genuine purpose. You find that purpose by experiencing everything positive that you possibly can. As you do this you are working on behave of The Universe. You pick out one or more special areas where can really put in the time and effort and feel the rewards.

What will you experience when you know that you have permission to experience? Nothing is holding you back. Except yourself. You now know the purpose of your life. Let life unfold before you as you experience every new minute as a fulfillment of your purpose.

4. Question: What will happen when I understand all of this?

Answer: You feel gratified. You luxuriate in your own life. This is beyond contentedness. Sort of like contentedness with the “BAM” of exhilaration. There is something to propel you out of bed in the morning.

Motivation is self-generated. You cannot wait for someone outside yourself to “make” you get out of bed in the morning. That only works for a short period until you begin to resent the other for making you get out of bed.

You need to be self-motivated through gratification. The luxury you feel in your life through gratification will be a motivating factor.

5. Question: Is it going to take me where I want to go?

Answer: Only you can know where you want to go. But wherever it is that you want to go, meaning, happiness and purpose, will see you there in style. In other words, you determine where you want to go and these three musketeers, meaning, happiness and purpose, will help you get where you are going.

Please do not be one of those folks who let others decide for them. Do not get me wrong. Sometimes we need others to direct us for a time, like we may need police officers or firefighters to help when burglary or house fire strike us.

But so many people allow themselves to fall into making government, for example, the bad guy when it comes to wanting an excuse for their own behavior. “I can’t do this because the politicians won’t let me.” Really?

Be your own boss. Make your own decisions about your own life. Don’t look for excuses – look for reasons why you can get ahead. Make your own life; you have that power. You will get where you want to go, when you decide that direction and decide you will accomplish your goal.

There you have five ideas to help you know what to do with your happiness and the meaning of life. Exercise those five beginning in this minute and continuing for the rest of your life.

What Is Happiness?

Happiness is, of course, going to mean different things to different people. Here are my ideas.

To be happy is the meaning of life. This statement is attested to by various sages both ancient and modern.

But how do you find and keep happiness? Here are the three ideas:

Remainder of text for this post is immediately following this video pane:

1. Make and keep a connection with The Source of All There Is. Some will name this source “God.” You may name it anything you wish, or name it nothing at all. All I ask is that you drop any baggage that the term “God” may have held for you.

2. Experience your life as if it was meaningful – for it is. In other words, seek as many positive experiences as you can hold. This is the purpose of your life.

3. Beam your bliss into the world through experiencing and sharing. When you know meaning, happiness and purpose, this beaming will feel like it must be done.

Here’s what I mean in expanded detail.

It is my belief that in order to be happy you need make a genuine connection to The Source of All There Is. Why? For the simple reason that the world and life in the world cannot give you happiness. You cannot discover real happiness in the world because it is not there.

It is not in the world because all things and even people in the world eventually disappear. There is nothing permanent in the corporal world. It grieves us all that this is the case. But it must be faced for it is something that all of us will face sooner or later.

What is permanent, if anything? It seems to me that the Universe is permanent. The Universe is The Source of All There Is. The energy of the Universe is never lost, never vanishes to never be seen again.

Everything comes from this Source – the Universe. In It you live and move and have your being. Without It you could not be.

But why make a connection to It? Because in It you will find complete and utterly unconditional acceptance. In that acceptance you will find meaning. The meaning of life is to be happy. You find happiness because you are completely accepted as you are.

There is no grander feeling than to be completely, totally accepted – no conditions or qualifications. This is meaning and happiness.

Okay. So finding complete acceptance is to find the meaning of life which is to be happy. But what do you do with your life? What’s your purpose?

Because The Source of All There is the Complete Entity it cannot be in relationship to anything else. It is whole. Yet it needs to feel active, vibrant, real. How does anything know what it feels like to be real?

By interacting with other things. Experiencing itself as over against something else. So, you get to be the interacting agent on behalf of The Source of All There Is. You can experience yourself as experiencing.

What do you need to experience? Everything positive that you can hold or encounter. No one, including The Source, tells you what you must digest as experience. You are free to choose. You choose many, many opportunities over a lifetime.

When you do this encountering, you are living on behalf of The Source. That is your purpose.

When you know the meaning of life, which is to be happy, and when you are experiencing – fulfilling your purpose – you will feel impelled to beam your bliss into the world.

In other words, you will feel like sharing what you know about meaning, happiness, purpose. Just as if you won the lottery and you want to share your good news with everyone, so you will feel about true, real happiness.

You beam your bliss by giving yourself away. That can be done in a myriad of ways. Teach. Donate. Build. Comfort. Encourage. And more.

While you are beaming your bliss, you will be reinforcing your own happiness by spreading that happiness and seeing the results in other people’s lives. You will be developing a pleasant circle (as opposed to a vicious circle).

There you have it: an answer to the question, “What Is happiness?” Get to developing within yourself those three ideas right now.

What Does Your Mind Culture Say About Your Meaning and Happiness?

At the beginning, you must understand that you can change your mind. You can literally rewire your mind so that what you want is readily apparent to you.

When you realize that you can change your mind, then you can change your life.

Pete had made an appointment to meet with me a week before. He arrived in his usual disheveled manner. Pete was a very organized guy except when it came to his appearance.

The rest of the text for this post follows immediately after this video pane:

To look at him it would seem that he never had a clue. But when you got to know him, you discovered he was a sharp as a tack.

We exchanged the usual pleasantries. Then I asked, “What’s up, Pete?”

“Um, I want to feel happy, Dr. Bob. But I can’t,” he said.

As gently as I could I said, “What do you mean, you can’t?”

“The more I try, the worse it seems to get.”

If you looked at Pete’s tousled appearance you might assume that he was stating the obvious. He looked as if he could not organize a table setting, let alone organize his mind. Don’t get me wrong here. Pete was an amazing person other than the state of his clothing. The importance of dressing neatly just wasn’t important to him.

“But Pete, you are so very organized in almost everything else you do. You are a successful business man, here in the local economy. From what everyone can see, your family is healthy and happy.”

Pete said, “All that is true, Dr. Bob. But appearances can be deceiving. Yes, my business goes very well. Added two more employees just last week. Family life is well. Oldest girl graduates from highschool this coming June. But I cannot get my mind to accept these and also to let me be happy.”

There it was – the clue. Pete had just said he could not get his mind to accept and let him be happy. Something was blocking his way to happiness.

“What’s it like when you try to meditate and make connection with The All There Is?” I asked.

“I have a good connection with the Cosmic Consciousness, I think. But almost immediately after a meditation session, I begin to hear ideas in my mind. The ideas, before you ask,” he said with a smile, “say to me that I don’t deserve happiness.”

This kind of problem is much more common than you might think. Many people have great difficulty in allowing themselves to be happy.

“All right, let’s find out where you acquired this blockage to happiness. Where do you think these ideas against happiness come from?” I asked.

“I have thought about that,” said Pete. “I can remember my grandmother, who lived with us all the time I was growing up, until my junior year in high school, when she went to a nursing home, saying over and over again, no one deserves happiness. She would say you have to earn happiness.”

“And you feel that you haven’t done enough to have earned happiness?” I asked Pete.

“No. I can never seem to convince myself that I have earned it yet.”

“Well, there you have it. Your brain is literally wired with that idea your grandmother gave you. And no one in the family ever argued with her about it. Did they?”

“No, they didn’t. What are you getting at, Dr. Bob?”

“Just this. Happiness is not earned. It is a given. When you make deep and lasting connection with The Source of All There Is, you find total acceptance. In that total acceptance is meaning and happiness.

“But your grandmother taught you that you have to earn happiness. What you have, in effect, is a brain-culture that you were always fighting against. Never winning. The culture said that you have to earn happiness. You believed it. You believe it still.”

“How do I get out of that mind-culture?” Pete asked.

“First, you become aware of it. You just have. Then, second, you work over time to change the culture of your mind. You rewire, through repetition, your mind.

“How long will it take? I don’t know. I know it is different for each person. I know also that it can be done. You believe it can be done and it will be. Your mind will change.”

“How do I rewire my mind?”

“Affirmation after affirmation. Like – Happiness is a given by The Source of All There Is. Or, I deserve happiness because The Source of All There Is has given it to me. Or something else that you devise.”

“That simple, Dr. Bob?”

“Yes, that simple. But the effort may take a while. You have to commit to it.”

Pete said, “I want to be happy. I want my mind-culture to change. I’ll work at it.”

We made an appointment for six months later, with the idea that if he needed it, Pete could, of course, come visit with me at any appointed time.

Six months later Pete was visibly changed. No, he was still his disheveled self. But his face had changed. He declared he had a different mind-culture now.

If you are not as happy as you wish to be, look inside to see if there is some culture of belief or attitude that keeps you from being as happy as you wish to be. If so, change it. You can do it. Start now.
