The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Behaving Well Is Self Serving – You Bet It Is 90
For many hundreds of years, perhaps thousands, some of the religious organizations of the world, especially in the Western hemisphere, used the threat of Hell to get people to behave. This even went to so far as to officially remove reincarnation as a doctrine so as not to give people “another chance” at living their lives as “they should.”

In the 21st century, many people have dropped their belief in Hell. Even the Roman Catholic Church has dropped its doctrine of God imposing a place of torture that lasts for eternity. Of course, most of the Eastern hemisphere’s religious organizations or philosophies had never believed in Hell.
So how are people to be kept in order? What incentive do we have to behave? We teach people to be self serving. What you do comes back to you. Like dropping a pebble in a small pond. Watch ripples undulate from the pebble-drop. But them watch those same ripples repeat back upon themselves, to the very spot where the pebble was first dropped. This demonstrates cause and effect.
See that? Cause and effect. If I do something, the cause, it will come back to me, the effect. This has been understood for thousands of years in the East. Even so much so that the idea of reincarnation has within its insight that a person may have to have repeated lives in order to work out this cause and effect. This is often given the name Karma. This is not punishment. We are simply taught about the Universe being constructed in such a way that what one does, has a very definite effect upon you.
That effect may not happen in the next instant. But it will happen. And the greater or more potent the cause, the larger or more powerful the effect will be.
So, we teach people, actually children from a very early age, that what you do comes back upon you. Do good or well, good will come back upon you. One of my own favorite proverbs, something I made up myself is this: “The evil that men do comes back upon them.”
Of course, the positive is just as true: “The good that men do comes back upon them.”
We teach people to behave by showing them that there is cause and effect, by living this truth ourselves. There is no God telling us we are going to Hell if we don’t behave. We will put ourselves into a hell if we misbehave.
I imagine, however, that this shift is going to be difficult to implement. Religious organizations will have to change drastically. Knowing what I do about religious organizations, this may take generations to happen. In the meantime, more and more Western hemisphere people will turn to Eastern hemisphere philosophies and religions that teach cause and effect.
Is cause and effect self serving? You bet it is. But when we serve ourselves well and know that there are consequences for those actions, then everyone benefits.
