God Does Not Need Your Worship and What That Has To Do With Happiness

It used to be that people who were raised in religion felt they needed to worship God. If they did not worship, then that would add to their list of sins. These sins would eventually catch up to them. Enough sins accumulated and unpardoned and they would be sent to hell at their death.

Then the developed world began to move away from religion. The societies of the richest nations became more and more secular. Fewer and fewer people went to their places of worship on the appointed day. This was especially true in countries where there was a state religion.

The remainder of the text of this post is immediately following this video pane:

In countries with state religions, the clergy are usually paid by the state. This puts an onus on the state of mind with which the people look at their clergy. In other words, their clergy are paid by the state, how sincere can they be?

And what preachments the clergy proposed where suspect as well. Under such suspicions and the secularization of society, people drifted away from worship. However, often in people’s minds there lingered the idea that God was not being worshiped properly or enough.

Those who still remembered what they had been brought up in, felt themselves ill-at-ease because they did not worship. This ill-ease caused various levels of anxiety. This anxiety decreased their happiness.

But God does not need to be worshiped. Worship pays attention to God. God does not need the attention. First, because there is no physical being named God. What many name God is the Vast Consciousness that is the Universe. Pure Consciousness.

As such this Vast Consciousness is self-contained. It needs nothing. It is, already, everything. If the Vast Consciousness is everything, has everything, then It does not need worship. It does not need attention for attention’s sake.

St. Augustine said, “The worship of God is the life well lived.” In a life well lived you will find happiness. Happiness will help lead you to life well lived.

Here is where it gets a little tricky. You have to shift gears. Move off center just a bit. Worship is paying devoted attention to something. God does not need your whining attention. But the Vast Consciousness of the Universe wants you in touch.

Careful. Proceed with caution. This is not worship, but it is a kind of attention. Through meditative type exercises, you get in touch with the Vast Consciousness. In that link is to be found happiness.

This in-touch-ness is not for God’s sake, it is for your sake. When in touch with the Vast Consciousness you know you are accepted and that you eternally belong. Across that link there are no conditions or qualifications.

When you have found your home in the Vast Consciousness, you know happiness and meaning. What could be greater happiness than knowing your are totally, unconditionally accepted just as you are? What could bring greater meaning to your life than understanding your own place in the Universe?

There is no worship needed or wanted because you have formed a sort of partnership with the Vast Consciousness. Your consciousness communicates with the Vast Consciousness. You share thoughts with God. You can share everything with the Vast Consciousness.

What greater way can there be to promote your own happiness than participating in this partnership? What’s your part as a result? Simply to experience as much as you can through your life. It is that simple, and that profound.

This does not mean that you must not participate in worshiping communities. It means that you need no longer feel compelled to take part. Nor need you feel condemned if you do not take part. You can enjoy the fellowship and the warm feelings – if you chose to.

So, change from worship to partnership through the unconditional acceptance of the Vast Consciousness. In that partnership you will know happiness. Begin today.

The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Behaving Well Is Self Serving – You Bet It Is 90

For many hundreds of years, perhaps thousands, some of the religious organizations of the world, especially in the Western hemisphere, used the threat of Hell to get people to behave. This even went to so far as to officially remove reincarnation as a doctrine so as not to give people “another chance” at living their lives as “they should.”

In the 21st century, many people have dropped their belief in Hell. Even the Roman Catholic Church has dropped its doctrine of God imposing a place of torture that lasts for eternity. Of course, most of the Eastern hemisphere’s religious organizations or philosophies had never believed in Hell.

So how are people to be kept in order? What incentive do we have to behave? We teach people to be self serving. What you do comes back to you. Like dropping a pebble in a small pond. Watch ripples undulate from the pebble-drop. But them watch those same ripples repeat back upon themselves, to the very spot where the pebble was first dropped. This demonstrates cause and effect.

See that? Cause and effect. If I do something, the cause, it will come back to me, the effect. This has been understood for thousands of years in the East. Even so much so that the idea of reincarnation has within its insight that a person may have to have repeated lives in order to work out this cause and effect. This is often given the name Karma. This is not punishment. We are simply taught about the Universe being constructed in such a way that what one does, has a very definite effect upon you.

That effect may not happen in the next instant. But it will happen. And the greater or more potent the cause, the larger or more powerful the effect will be.

So, we teach people, actually children from a very early age, that what you do comes back upon you. Do good or well, good will come back upon you. One of my own favorite proverbs, something I made up myself is this: “The evil that men do comes back upon them.”

Of course, the positive is just as true: “The good that men do comes back upon them.”

We teach people to behave by showing them that there is cause and effect, by living this truth ourselves. There is no God telling us we are going to Hell if we don’t behave. We will put ourselves into a hell if we misbehave.

I imagine, however, that this shift is going to be difficult to implement. Religious organizations will have to change drastically. Knowing what I do about religious organizations, this may take generations to happen. In the meantime, more and more Western hemisphere people will turn to Eastern hemisphere philosophies and religions that teach cause and effect.

Is cause and effect self serving? You bet it is. But when we serve ourselves well and know that there are consequences for those actions, then everyone benefits.

The Meaning of Life and Hell Is For Slackers

The meaning of life and hell is for slackers; what can that mean? It is estimated that most people in the United States still believe that there is a physical heaven and hell. That bad people will go to hell when they die and good people will go to heaven. Most people say this but they don’t really believe it. Most people’s lives don’t reflect the idea. However, they are very willing to put this idea on someone else.

Hell Is For Slackers

Hell Is For Slackers

I believe hell is used by people who are slackers. These folks are willing to go along every day and do and say many things that might qualify them for hell. I am not going to make a list here because that would make me a god, which I definitely am not. However, I believe these kinds of folks (call them Group A) dismiss the lives of others (call them Group B) by believing that those Group B will go to hell for what they have done. But not for what Group A, themselves, have done. Or Group A really doesn’t believe in hell. They slack off when it comes to real belief in hell.

Slackers.

The meaning of life is to be happy. This blog has established that time and again. Well, then, if it is true, thinking that someone else is going to hell, lets those who think that off the hook. They need not concern themselves with the hell that others are facing. Slackers. If the happiness of others is of no concern of theirs, responsibility does not lie with them.

But the meaning of life is to be happy. One can surely find and keep happiness within oneself. And you are not responsible for the happiness of others. However, even quantum physics, a science, that is, something outside of religion, shows that we are all one. So, what is good for one, is good for all. What is bad for one, is bad for all.
Believing that there is a hell lets slackers off the hook. It gives responsibility for the one that we all are, into the hands of fate or God or “the devil,” in the afterlife. We do not have and cannot have responsibility for everyone’s else happiness. But as long as we are not working for the happiness of others, we are neglecting the one we all are.

The meaning of life is to be happy and to beam that happiness out so others may see and change.
