Sharing the Meaning of Life from "This" Perspective

Choose Meaning and Happiness for Yourself

In the garden of Gethsemane, there is a poignant scene in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus is given to agonize over what may be coming next in his life.

He is given to say, “Thy will be done.”

The rest of the text for this post follows right after this video pane:

People have taken that saying to mean that God is going give you what life you are going to live. In other words, you are fated to be and do as some outside force wishes. You have little or no say in what your life will be.

Your happiness is determined by an outside force, so many people believe.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

It is true that a natural disaster such as a tornado may indeed affect your life. That is an outside force over which you have no control.

However, if you had built or made ready a storm shelter with provisions for a disaster such as food and water, you might have shaped your own outcome. So you have some say-so in the matter.

The point of this article is that you do have a part to play in determining your own meaning and happiness. It is not simply handed to you on a silver platter or imposed upon you as fate.

You are not destined to have this degree of happiness or that degree of meaning. These are not thrust upon you in certain amounts by an outside source, namely God.

You choose how much meaning and happiness you shall have.

How? By the connection you cultivate and maintain between yourself and The All There Is (Tathis).

(Tathis is a word I coined to subtract as much baggage as possible from the term “God.” It is a combination of the first letter of The, the first letter of All, the first two letters of There, and the entire word Is. It is pronounced with a long “a” [as in plate] and the  word “this.”)

You build such a linkage through the use of meditation or prayer. It is a discovery of the totally unconditional acceptance that Tathis extends to you.

Please notice I stated, “extends to you.” Tathis does not give something to you in the conventional sense of the word “give.” You already have everything because you are a division of Tathis. So, Tathis need not give you anything you already possess.

Tathis extends to you unconditional acceptance in that relationship you establish with Tathis. In other words, that acceptance is already there but now it feels like it  is flowing toward you.

You have opened yourself to that confirmation. That confirmation was always moving toward you, you just didn’t realize it.

You always have the choice to turn and move yourself toward a rendezvous with Tathis. “God” does not impose anything on you. You are free.

In this freedom is your great choice. But it is in that choice that you begin to make your own life your own life.

Sounds redundant and ridiculous, doesn’t it? Because Tathis does not impose anything on you, you make your life what it is. By your choices and your intentions you attract to yourself all that you will find in life.

Yes, there will still be those incidents where something will be forced upon you from the outside. Still, you have the rock-solid opportunity to make a choice about how you will react to any happening in your life.

Beyond these forced events, however, you attract to your life that which you are. When you find your meaning and happiness, you will be attracting positive people and happenings to your life.

Why? Because you will be in that mode. What mode is that? The style of fashioning your own tomorrows. Forging what the next minute of your life will be all about. You have the choice, always, of having your life be full of meaning and happiness, or full of sorrow and despair because you believe you are fated in a certain way.

Do not ever let anyone try to convince you that your life is simply planned for you – that you are fated to have or have not … anything.

The choice is always yours. So, it is not “thy will be done,” in the conventional sense. It is done as you will it to be, when you will it to be.

Get to it.

You Have Misunderstood God and Why That Affects Your Happiness

You have misunderstood God. Well, chances are you have. For millennia, humans have misunderstood the gods or God. They thought the gods could do something about the problems humans face.

Long, long ago, of course, people thought that the gods affected everything in their world. The world’s largest religion is still animism. Animism is essentially believing that there is a non-worldly spirit in each object: tree, rock, mountain, cloud, wind, etc.

So if folks directed their attention or worship toward these objects properly, those folks could get those spirits to respond as was needed. As I said this kind of devotion still exists in abundance in the world today.

The rest of the text for this post is found immediately after this video pane:

Then some people graduated to larger gods. Gods that ruled the sky or the winds or the oceans or the netherworld. Once again it was thought that enough sacrifice and supplication could get these gods to do as people wanted. Things like calm the seas so sailors would not drown, abundant crops so entire populations would not starve.

Then monotheism came into the world. Monotheism is devotion to and the worship of one god. One God ruled over all the earth and when people worshiped him properly and in sufficient quantity, God would do what they wanted. This God was often cast as a male.

Enough things did happen as people wanted that they could give credit to their gods or God for having delivered. A group of people grew up around these gods to tell the people how and how much to worship the goods or God. They were often called priests.

These priests often told the people how to be happy. That is they set up a strict code of conduct and as long as the people followed such a code, they could be happy. Because the priests had the power of the gods on their side, the ordinary folks believed the priests and followed their instructions.

So their happiness depended on their conduct. And that is where things stood until recent human history. I am afraid that there are still many people who depend upon their conduct for happiness. I do not mean that people ought to run wild with no restraint.

I mean that when your happiness depends upon how you conduct yourself in relation to gods or God, you are mistaken. You have placed your happiness in mistaken territory. The Vast Consciousness that is the Universe does not need your conduct. The Cosmic Consciousness does not need your worship or pleadings or anything, to respond to you.

But in that mistaken territory people still believe that if they conduct their lives in a certain way, they will get what they want from their God. Cure for cancer, new job, kids out of trouble, all these things and much more they believe will be forth coming if they treat God just right. Perhaps say just enough prayers and all will be well.

I am sorry but it does not work that way. The Cosmic Consciousness is on your side right now, before you do or say anything. What taps you into that Consciousness is forging a link, a connection between you and the Cosmic Consciousness. You do that through meditative type applications.

In other words, through such applications as meditation you forge a link between you and the Cosmic Consciousness. In this eternal bond you find true happiness. But you do not have to behave in a certain way in the outside world. You do not have to deliver so many hours of worship or so many words of prayer to feel this Cosmic Consciousness on your side. All you need is that nexus between you and the Cosmic Consciousness.

Then, as you dwell in that eternal, serene attachment, you call to yourself the aid of the Universe. You evoke the power of the Universe. When you have dwelt in that connection as you have needed, that which you want may materialize in your life.

Sounds like I am getting close to saying if you stay in that posture with the Cosmic Consciousness long enough, you will get what you want. Sounds like it, but I am not. You tell the Universe the what and the Universe will answer in time with the how.

In other words, it is you who determines what happens in your life. Do you see the reversal of roles, here? Used to be that the gods or God would determine what was to happen. Now it is you who determines what happens in your life. The responsibility for your life has shifted from gods-based to you-based. Your happiness is in your hands.

Once you have understood the Cosmic Consciousness well, you are on your way to happiness and demonstrating for yourself in your own life what you want. What’s left? You need to develop the connection between you and the Cosmic Consciousness beginning right now. Continue that relationship until you have all the happiness you can stand.

God Does Not Need Your Worship and What That Has To Do With Happiness

It used to be that people who were raised in religion felt they needed to worship God. If they did not worship, then that would add to their list of sins. These sins would eventually catch up to them. Enough sins accumulated and unpardoned and they would be sent to hell at their death.

Then the developed world began to move away from religion. The societies of the richest nations became more and more secular. Fewer and fewer people went to their places of worship on the appointed day. This was especially true in countries where there was a state religion.

The remainder of the text of this post is immediately following this video pane:

In countries with state religions, the clergy are usually paid by the state. This puts an onus on the state of mind with which the people look at their clergy. In other words, their clergy are paid by the state, how sincere can they be?

And what preachments the clergy proposed where suspect as well. Under such suspicions and the secularization of society, people drifted away from worship. However, often in people’s minds there lingered the idea that God was not being worshiped properly or enough.

Those who still remembered what they had been brought up in, felt themselves ill-at-ease because they did not worship. This ill-ease caused various levels of anxiety. This anxiety decreased their happiness.

But God does not need to be worshiped. Worship pays attention to God. God does not need the attention. First, because there is no physical being named God. What many name God is the Vast Consciousness that is the Universe. Pure Consciousness.

As such this Vast Consciousness is self-contained. It needs nothing. It is, already, everything. If the Vast Consciousness is everything, has everything, then It does not need worship. It does not need attention for attention’s sake.

St. Augustine said, “The worship of God is the life well lived.” In a life well lived you will find happiness. Happiness will help lead you to life well lived.

Here is where it gets a little tricky. You have to shift gears. Move off center just a bit. Worship is paying devoted attention to something. God does not need your whining attention. But the Vast Consciousness of the Universe wants you in touch.

Careful. Proceed with caution. This is not worship, but it is a kind of attention. Through meditative type exercises, you get in touch with the Vast Consciousness. In that link is to be found happiness.

This in-touch-ness is not for God’s sake, it is for your sake. When in touch with the Vast Consciousness you know you are accepted and that you eternally belong. Across that link there are no conditions or qualifications.

When you have found your home in the Vast Consciousness, you know happiness and meaning. What could be greater happiness than knowing your are totally, unconditionally accepted just as you are? What could bring greater meaning to your life than understanding your own place in the Universe?

There is no worship needed or wanted because you have formed a sort of partnership with the Vast Consciousness. Your consciousness communicates with the Vast Consciousness. You share thoughts with God. You can share everything with the Vast Consciousness.

What greater way can there be to promote your own happiness than participating in this partnership? What’s your part as a result? Simply to experience as much as you can through your life. It is that simple, and that profound.

This does not mean that you must not participate in worshiping communities. It means that you need no longer feel compelled to take part. Nor need you feel condemned if you do not take part. You can enjoy the fellowship and the warm feelings – if you chose to.

So, change from worship to partnership through the unconditional acceptance of the Vast Consciousness. In that partnership you will know happiness. Begin today.
