TaWane came through my office door that had the sign “The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy” on it, black letters on white background this day. (I changed the format of the sign frequently.) TaWane was one of the youngest persons I ever life coached. He was just 17. He held a B+ average at high school, ran on the cross-country and track teams. Close cropped black hair, black eyes.

“What can I do for you TaWane?” I asked.

“Doc, you can tell me why I am here on this earth. It seems I am just another young black kid with a limited future because of an absent father and terrible neighborhood. So, what’s up with me?”

To say I was stunned to silence would have an understatement. “Well,. . .” I fumbled. This is one of those “How far down the rabbit hole do you really want to go?” questions. But he had asked it and maybe he was looking for a solid answer, not some hype and psycho-babble.

“TaWane, do you believe in some kind of God?” He said he did but not the one in pictures that people said were God. He had studied physics and knew some of the relationships within the universe, he said. So, for him God was not a wise old man in the sky directing traffic with hell as the consequence of driving badly. He stunned me once again into momentary silence.

“So we’ve got a God who is consciousness, pure consciousness. Buy that?” I asked. TaWane said he did. “What can Consciousness do?” TaWane proceeded to tell me he thought consciousness could do about anything it wanted. Pure Consciousness, God, he said, could create anything. “But does It create?” I asked.

That gave him a little pause, but only a little. TaWane said that God needed to create in order to experience. Pure consciousness is just that. Pure consciousness does not experience, it only “thinks” about experiencing.

He walked himself into his own explanation of why he was here on earth. “Are you also consciousness?” I asked him. He acknowledged that he was. “Yet, what do you do all day long?” I asked again.

He said, “I experience . . . ” He trailed off as the light in his eyes grew more intense. “And quantum physics tells me I am part of the One. It must be that I am some part of God – experiencing.”

“You are an individualization of the Consciousness of God, to experience on behalf of God. That is the reason you are here, now. This is the meaning of your life. Tell me, what do you feel when you are experiencing from what seems to be your connection to the One?”

TaWane said, “I feel . . . happy.” He had gotten it all wrapped up and ready to take home. TaWane “sailed” from the office that day. He survived his family and neighborhood and leads a productive life today. I first saw in him in the office more than 25 years ago.

You, too, experiencing this blog post, are an individualization of the consciousness of God, experiencing on Its behalf. When you experience life from the core of your being which is connection consciousness to consciousness with God, you are happy. You have found the meaning of your life.

The Meaning of Life and The Purpose of My Life

The Meaning of Life and Your Purpose in LifeI had just given a talk about the meaning of life. At the greeting line, one woman said to me, “I need you to tell me exactly what to do.”

I told her I couldn’t do that because she was her own person and needed to follow her own path. “But,” she said, “you clergy have always told me what to do with my life.”

Again, I said I was not going to do that. She was free to choose her own way of life. She did not attend many of my talks after that. She simply needed someone to tell her what to do. She thought.

So, this blog post is not going to tell you what to do. But one of our readers has asked the question, “What is the purpose of my life?” Believe me when I say that many, many people struggle with this question. Even more would engage this question if they allowed themselves the time to do so. They are so busy with life that they never stop long enough to discover what their life-purpose is. And I cannot “sit on high” and prescribe for anyone what they shall be and do.

The way you discover meaning in life and find your way to your purpose is by first making contact with the Divine, first. Meditation is the best and fastest way to that goal. Through contact with the Divine, you will discover that you are loved just as you are. You are accepted just as you are. This is liberation from any tyrannies that might say to you that “must” do this or you “must” be that.

Divine Contact Map

Happiness and Purpose Map

When you have discovered this liberation, you will know that your purpose, at foundational levels, is simply “to be.” (To be what? To be happy.) In other words, you are here on earth during your lifetime to experience all that is appropriate for you to experience. (A la Neale Donald Walsch in Conversations with God, which I wholeheartedly recommend.)

When you have accepted within yourself that you are free to experience, then you look around to see what brings you the best resonance with the happiness you have through contact with the Divine. This can be a literal feeling of warmth and joy in the torso of your body.

Example, but only an example. Suppose you have felt so liberated that you discovered flowers for the “first time” in your life. Yes, flowers have always been around you. But in your bliss of acceptance you really see them. One day you are encouraged from somewhere to buy a bunch of flowers and arrange them. Arranging the flowers and seeing the completed arrangement gives you great resonance in the core of your being (Perhaps even literally in your body’s torso or even at a spiritual level.) It “dawns” on you that you could make a life (living) out of arranging flowers. Maybe then you have found your purpose in life.

Start by being happy at your core, then beam that bliss into the corporal world. When things are “right” for your and your purpose, you feel that resonance within you.

The meaning of life is to be happy. Your find your purpose through that bliss. Begin today to beam your bliss into the world.

The Meaning of Life and the Tomato Plant that Would Not Die

My wife likes fresh tomatoes but is not much of a gardener. (Don’t worry, she’ll admit this herself.) So, she bought one plant to raise just a few tomatoes. From the start this tomato plant was different than any we have experienced.

The first thing it did, beginning at about 12 inches tall, was to curl its leaves into tight “fists.” We wondered what was wrong. Maybe it had a disease. Our horticulturist son-in-law said that sometimes happens. It could have a virus and just curled up like that because it was in distress. We felt for the tomato plant. But it would not die.

Next our nursery worker grandson asked if we were watering it. We said we were. He said it needed water every morning and every evening if it was to do well. The leaves were curled up because it was trying to conserve its water. It was about 2 feet tall then. It won’t die.

Well, what could it hurt? We began giving it water morning and night. Behold! The leaves uncurled and it got a few blossoms on it. So, the problem was that it was not getting enough water. We watered it faithfully along with the other plants nearby. But it needed more. But it would not die.

Next it grew so heavily in one direction that it ripped its cage right out of the ground. It was almost lying on its side. I had to stake down the cage to keep the plant from breaking. But it would not die.

Then we have a torrential down pour that washed all the soil from around the roots of the plant. I thought, “This is it. It can’t live through this.” So, I went out and tried to pull it out of the ground to end its misery. (And mine as well.) But there were some roots still firmly embedded in the earth and the tomato would not be pulled up. Well, I thought, I’ll get some potting soil and fill over the exposed roots and water it. And see what happens. We just could not kill the plant.

Covered the exposed roots; watered it faithfully; we gotten about 2 dozen tomatoes off of it so far. Even a recent frost did not kill the beast.

What does this true story have to do with the meaning of life? The tomato plant was given a specific task to perform in its DNA. (Yes, you can say that God, or as I prefer, The Source of All That Is, gave it its task.) So, that plant tried its best to live and fulfill its purpose.

That’s what the meaning of life is for you. You are given a specific task by The Source of All That Is. That task is to Experience. Experience what? Everything. I know, I know, “everything” is a dangerous word. But whatever fits you and your experiencing is your task in life. The meaning of your life. Don’t ever give up on yourself until you have experienced everything possible for you. Live. Experience. Fulfill your task.

I wholeheartedly invite comments and concerns.
