You Have Misunderstood God and Why That Affects Your Happiness

You have misunderstood God. Well, chances are you have. For millennia, humans have misunderstood the gods or God. They thought the gods could do something about the problems humans face.

Long, long ago, of course, people thought that the gods affected everything in their world. The world’s largest religion is still animism. Animism is essentially believing that there is a non-worldly spirit in each object: tree, rock, mountain, cloud, wind, etc.

So if folks directed their attention or worship toward these objects properly, those folks could get those spirits to respond as was needed. As I said this kind of devotion still exists in abundance in the world today.

The rest of the text for this post is found immediately after this video pane:

Then some people graduated to larger gods. Gods that ruled the sky or the winds or the oceans or the netherworld. Once again it was thought that enough sacrifice and supplication could get these gods to do as people wanted. Things like calm the seas so sailors would not drown, abundant crops so entire populations would not starve.

Then monotheism came into the world. Monotheism is devotion to and the worship of one god. One God ruled over all the earth and when people worshiped him properly and in sufficient quantity, God would do what they wanted. This God was often cast as a male.

Enough things did happen as people wanted that they could give credit to their gods or God for having delivered. A group of people grew up around these gods to tell the people how and how much to worship the goods or God. They were often called priests.

These priests often told the people how to be happy. That is they set up a strict code of conduct and as long as the people followed such a code, they could be happy. Because the priests had the power of the gods on their side, the ordinary folks believed the priests and followed their instructions.

So their happiness depended on their conduct. And that is where things stood until recent human history. I am afraid that there are still many people who depend upon their conduct for happiness. I do not mean that people ought to run wild with no restraint.

I mean that when your happiness depends upon how you conduct yourself in relation to gods or God, you are mistaken. You have placed your happiness in mistaken territory. The Vast Consciousness that is the Universe does not need your conduct. The Cosmic Consciousness does not need your worship or pleadings or anything, to respond to you.

But in that mistaken territory people still believe that if they conduct their lives in a certain way, they will get what they want from their God. Cure for cancer, new job, kids out of trouble, all these things and much more they believe will be forth coming if they treat God just right. Perhaps say just enough prayers and all will be well.

I am sorry but it does not work that way. The Cosmic Consciousness is on your side right now, before you do or say anything. What taps you into that Consciousness is forging a link, a connection between you and the Cosmic Consciousness. You do that through meditative type applications.

In other words, through such applications as meditation you forge a link between you and the Cosmic Consciousness. In this eternal bond you find true happiness. But you do not have to behave in a certain way in the outside world. You do not have to deliver so many hours of worship or so many words of prayer to feel this Cosmic Consciousness on your side. All you need is that nexus between you and the Cosmic Consciousness.

Then, as you dwell in that eternal, serene attachment, you call to yourself the aid of the Universe. You evoke the power of the Universe. When you have dwelt in that connection as you have needed, that which you want may materialize in your life.

Sounds like I am getting close to saying if you stay in that posture with the Cosmic Consciousness long enough, you will get what you want. Sounds like it, but I am not. You tell the Universe the what and the Universe will answer in time with the how.

In other words, it is you who determines what happens in your life. Do you see the reversal of roles, here? Used to be that the gods or God would determine what was to happen. Now it is you who determines what happens in your life. The responsibility for your life has shifted from gods-based to you-based. Your happiness is in your hands.

Once you have understood the Cosmic Consciousness well, you are on your way to happiness and demonstrating for yourself in your own life what you want. What’s left? You need to develop the connection between you and the Cosmic Consciousness beginning right now. Continue that relationship until you have all the happiness you can stand.

The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Three Keys to Happiness in the World

There three keys to happiness that spring from the world and everts around you. These are: insightfulness, generosity and empathy.

First, nurture insightfulness toward what is going on around you. Most of us do not seek to understand our own world until that universe impinges upon us. We do not make ourselves aware.
Now, of course, it is impossible to be aware of all things. But look into your life and see what you need to be wise about.

Example: I received an email telling me that one of my money accounts had been corrupted. This email tried to convince me that I needed to do something immediately or my account would be closed. The email then gave me a form to fill out. On that form was a request for my social security number. However, I remembered reading that no legitimate website would ask for my social security number. I immediately closed the email. Then I got in touch with the money account staff. They assured me there was nothing wrong with my accounts from their end.

If I had not paid attention to warnings that came my way, I may have given someone the opportunity to break into my accounts and steal. A type of satisfaction was mine from this incident; satisfaction is a form of exterior happiness.

Second, be forthcoming with your wealth. Generosity. Hold on a minute, you say you are not wealthy. You always have something to give, no matter your income.

Example: My wife and I have limited funds. My wife, however, earns about $100 when she acts as presiding judge at a voting station. Yes, she gets money for this act of community service. But she also gets gratification from serving her community. Her time is well spent, she feels. We also have picked three causes that we give money to on a monthly basis. These are small amounts of money but two of them help humans and one helps animals. We feel good when we give of ourselves. You can give time, energy or money. Obviously feeling good about oneself is part of being happy.

Third, have empathy for persons in your life, or those that simply pass through for a brief time. Empathy implies a deep understanding of another person and accepting them as they are. Sympathy is far more general and can employ regard for another in a shallow way.

Example: here is where random acts of kindness come into your life. This is not quite the same as being forthcoming with your wealth. Empathy is an attitude.

For more than 38 years I spent my professional career in trying to be kind to people, even if they were not kind to me. Did your parents say to you, “kill them with kindness?” Even when people are mean or spiteful to you, you try to gain the upper hand for yourself by returning kindness for pettiness.

The only danger you face in being kind to others is that you will feel so good about yourself, that it may go to your head. That probably won’t happen, however, because soon a pettiness will be flung your way. Some people are just contrary. Answer contrariness with empathy.

There you have three keys to help you obtain outward happiness: insightfulness, generosity, empathy.

The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Walking Toward the Truth

People search high and wide for meaning in their lives. Are you one of them? There is a very simple method for increasing the meaning in your life. Walk toward the truth. Every day make an advance on verity. All truth is already contained within you. Follow that path to perfection.

(Rest of the text of this blog follows the video pane.)

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdUS8-a_0eo

When I speak of perfection I do not mean that you become perfect – never making mistake. I mean that you pursue a place within yourself, where everything makes perfect sense. Will this happen all the time as you are walking toward truth? No. But with practice and time, you will come closer and closer to the reality of the meaning of life for you.
Truth is ambiguous. By that I mean that my truth is probably not your truth. So, you have to be mindful that everyone looks at authenticity as they see it. In other words, two of us, you and me, can look at a computer video and quite possibly get two different, but valid, interpretations of the single video. You begin with your own perspective on all things. I begin with my own vision of the way things are.
Each of us, then, must work for his or her own truth that comes through our unique perspectives. This does not make you or me better than someone else. When you “see” a truth that is real to you, as you walk the path of veracity, you may claim it for yourself. But because you have seen a truth that is different from someone else, does not make your rank in the universe better than someone else’s. You need to understand that everyone’s truth may a little or a lot different that yours.
Besides, truth changes. Yipes. If truth changes, what’s the sense of chasing after it? Hold on there. Truth changes because you change. You do not have the same mind now that you had ten years ago. Everyone’s perspective changes according to how one interprets the events that occur in one’s life.
Take your emotional strength as an example. As a child you may have felt yourself powerless. Everyone was bigger and stronger and knew more than you. You lived with that powerlessness as your truth. But when you become an adult, you realized that you have your own strengths.  You may have changed your outlook on yourself. As an adult you have more physical strength than when you were a child. Not everyone is bigger. You know more about some subjects because of your study and experiences, than those of your immediate circle of friends and family.
Truth does change – because of your present day view. Your present day view may be quite different than it was last month.

But to walk towards the truth means you see what is best for you right now. Be prepared to modify your views, but constantly amble down the path of veracity. You will find meaning for your life even if you do nothing more than what helps you discover the validity of your life from your own point of view. From your own perception of validity you grow closer and close to Truth. As you grow closer to Truth, you will learn more of the meaning of you life. It almost just comes to you. You will gain a clearer and clearer vision of who you are. As you discover who you are, you will want to be the best version of yourself that you can. That leads, then, to continued strolling down the path of truth.
