The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and the Whole of Life and Where You Fit In

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

In the meaning of life, as I define it, to be happy, there is the place where you fit into life. Not knowing this is sad. In such a mood as that Gerry came through the door of my office. Shoulders drooping, countenance ashen, she eased herself into the chair as if she were positive that if she moved “wrong” she would cause herself great pain.

The complete text of this blog continues after the YouTube pane.

I asked her how she was doing. “That’s just it, Dr. Bob. I just came from a weekend with my in-laws and I feel ridiculous. Where do I fit in?” She told me of how they, the in-laws, seemed to exclude her. How, at first, it seemed like her imagination. But no, as the weekend wore on, she realized they were deliberately being rude and belittling. She said she tried to understand why this was happening. Gerry said she always had problems with feeling like she did not fit. At first thought it was her own emotional tone that made her feel as she had that weekend. However, the more aware she became of her own feelings, the more she realized it was not all her.

Here was an authentic life challenge for Gerry for two reasons. One, she understood that because of her own feelings, actions and words by others could set off her own negative opinions of herself. Two, actions and words by others can be designed by them to maneuver a person in the direction of being an outcast. Both are real challenges, one coming from a person’s interior life and the other from exterior life.

What to do? How to help Gerry see that she fit no matter what was happening outside herself? And quickly done too. She appeared desperate.

“Gerry, do you understand the idea of ‘Universe’? That there is the whole, the entirety of creation?”

She allowed that she thought so. I asked if she believed she was a part of this whole.

“Well, yes, if I am in the Universe, then I must be part of it. What’s the point, Dr. Bob?”

“The point is that if you are part of this entirety we name the Universe, if you were missing from it, would it be the same?”

“Of course not,” she replied. I avow to you that at that precise moment, as she finished her reply, the color began to return to her face. She then made the intuitive leap. “I am part of the Universe, so … I fit no matter what.”

Here is where I needed to let her be in her thoughts and not interject more than was necessary. Sometimes doing that, interjecting more information than is needed, just gums up the works.

With a smile, Gerry said, “I never thought of it that way. Is it that simple? Yes, it is. And no one can ever take my place.” Her physical expression going out of the office was the complete opposite, I would say, of her way of moving when she first came in.

You must to understand that your life is a needed and integral part of the Universe in which you live. Your place can only be taken by you. No one can replace you or what you represent to the Universe. You often cannot easily see this. But it is there and part of the meaning of life. In that meaning, obviously, when you feel you fit, you will know happiness.

The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and the Future Is in Your Consciousness Now 88

If prefer text only, please the words below the video pane, or is that pain? :-)

Shawna sort of bounced through the door to my office. Her blonde curls flouncing after her. She was maybe 27 or 28 at the time. Big smile on her facing while wearing a summer type dress of bright colors.

I thought to myself, she doesn’t present, that is, give off the vibe of having a problem. She settled herself primly in the interview chair. She chatted about the weather and how nice spring was moving along.

Then she came to her point. “Dr. Bob, I can’t figure out tomorrow. I know that sounds a bit strange. I think I’ve got this thing of living in the moment. But what if I want tomorrow to be different from today? How do I live in this moment and still make the next as I want it to be?”

I happen to have a ready answer for her. “You live now as if it will be your tomorrow. For your future is in your consciousness now. What you think and do, as you live in this moment, sets you up for what your tomorrow will be. Even sets you up for the next moment of your life.”

I had her think of the last time she was crying, either for sorrow or for joy. I showed that she just didn’t shut off the tears. They sort of had to run their course. Each moment one is in the act of crying, a certain emotional state is playing itself out. That emotional state cannot usually be turned off like a faucet. It takes time to subside.

Or like a runner who has just finished his race. He is gasping for breath and it takes time for his breathing to recover to normal.

But even more so in excited feelings. For in our consciousness tomorrow already exists. Now there is a full quantum insight to help explain this, but it was not necessary for Shawna. She wanted an answer to take with her within a few minutes, as most of us do. Suffice it to say that I showed that life is one continuous flow, though we can only really be in this moment. But whatever is happening in the flow of this moment, most often gets carried into the next.

So, be now what you want to be tomorrow. If you are down in this moment, resolve to change that by willing yourself, in this moment to be upbeat. If you are inattentive right now, decide right now to pay better attention and do so in this moment. If you are tired of mourning (feeling sad over a death) in this moment, determine to put away mourning right now. This kind of thing you do in each moment until your next moment, or your tomorrow, is the way you want it to be.

Shawna seemed to get the idea, especially after she suggested that is why kids can’t simply turn of the tears. They have worked themselves into a state and need time to change states.

I believe it is easy to make the connection between your consciousness and the future and being happy and knowing the meaning of your life. If you are not happy in this moment, you need to consciously do the things that will bring you happiness beginning now and continuing into the future. The future is already contained within your consciousness. You need only apply what you are aware of now with what you want to be aware in the next moment, or tomorrow.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and God’s Role in Your Happiness

The Meaning of Life and Cosmic ConsciousnessRegarding the meaning of life and happiness, C. S. Lewis said, “God can’t give us happiness and peace apart from himself because it is not there. There is no such thing.”

First, I think, we need to unpack the word “God.” Some of you reading this post will have no baggage to be carried around about the word “god.” However, others of you may have tremendous bags, loaded with all kinds of meaning: good, bad, indifferent.

Let me develop a singular definition of God for this post, so we are all on the same page at least for this post. God for me is the Cosmic, Universal Consciousness that is the Universe we live in. God is neither male nor female, does not make judgements, loves us all equally, supports and sustains life through unconditionally love. God’s main reason for bringing us into existence is that we might experience on God’s behave. God knows Itself through our experiences. For short, I’ll call God in this post, the Cosmic Consciousness.

Then, I can say that I believe that God can’t have us find happiness unless It, God, is involved. This doesn’t mean that the Cosmic Consciousness imposes Its will upon us. Rather, it means that the invitation to happiness is always open as we find our connection, our bond, with the Cosmic Consciousness. As C. S. Lewis put it, there is no such thing as happiness apart from the Cosmic Consciousness.Vibration

Why? Because the Universe is One harmonious entity. Happiness, after all, might be defined as being in complete harmony with oneself. Peace might be defined in precisely the same way – complete harmony within oneself. Complete Harmony is achieved when you resonate with the Cosmic Consciousness. Indeed, quantum physics shows us that all is vibration, literally. Some vibrations are at such a rate that we can see them. But we know there are other vibrations which we cannot see: infrared, x-ray, gamma ray, etc. Even the Earth, the planet upon which we live, have its own unique vibrational identity. To resonate with these frequencies is to set up or generate sympathetic vibes. To be in tune.

When God is defined as unconditional love, then when we would find unconditional love, know unconditional love, we will set ourselves to vibrating at the same frequencies as the Cosmic Consciousness. In other words, happiness is impossible without bond between the Cosmic Consciousness and yourself. This is not to arbitrary; this is not a demand with an “or else” attached to it. This is an invitation to join the on-going, everlasting party!

You can’t be happy unless you include the Cosmic Consciousness. You will be happy, now and always, when your voluntary bond with the Cosmic Consciousness is secured and steadfast from you side. The meaning of life which is to be happy, consists fully of sympathetic vibration with the Cosmic Consciousness.
