The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Three Keys to Happiness in the World

There three keys to happiness that spring from the world and everts around you. These are: insightfulness, generosity and empathy.

First, nurture insightfulness toward what is going on around you. Most of us do not seek to understand our own world until that universe impinges upon us. We do not make ourselves aware.
Now, of course, it is impossible to be aware of all things. But look into your life and see what you need to be wise about.

Example: I received an email telling me that one of my money accounts had been corrupted. This email tried to convince me that I needed to do something immediately or my account would be closed. The email then gave me a form to fill out. On that form was a request for my social security number. However, I remembered reading that no legitimate website would ask for my social security number. I immediately closed the email. Then I got in touch with the money account staff. They assured me there was nothing wrong with my accounts from their end.

If I had not paid attention to warnings that came my way, I may have given someone the opportunity to break into my accounts and steal. A type of satisfaction was mine from this incident; satisfaction is a form of exterior happiness.

Second, be forthcoming with your wealth. Generosity. Hold on a minute, you say you are not wealthy. You always have something to give, no matter your income.

Example: My wife and I have limited funds. My wife, however, earns about $100 when she acts as presiding judge at a voting station. Yes, she gets money for this act of community service. But she also gets gratification from serving her community. Her time is well spent, she feels. We also have picked three causes that we give money to on a monthly basis. These are small amounts of money but two of them help humans and one helps animals. We feel good when we give of ourselves. You can give time, energy or money. Obviously feeling good about oneself is part of being happy.

Third, have empathy for persons in your life, or those that simply pass through for a brief time. Empathy implies a deep understanding of another person and accepting them as they are. Sympathy is far more general and can employ regard for another in a shallow way.

Example: here is where random acts of kindness come into your life. This is not quite the same as being forthcoming with your wealth. Empathy is an attitude.

For more than 38 years I spent my professional career in trying to be kind to people, even if they were not kind to me. Did your parents say to you, “kill them with kindness?” Even when people are mean or spiteful to you, you try to gain the upper hand for yourself by returning kindness for pettiness.

The only danger you face in being kind to others is that you will feel so good about yourself, that it may go to your head. That probably won’t happen, however, because soon a pettiness will be flung your way. Some people are just contrary. Answer contrariness with empathy.

There you have three keys to help you obtain outward happiness: insightfulness, generosity, empathy.

The Meaning of Life and How to Be Happy and Make Others Happy

The meaning of life is to be happy. I’ll name drop just a little again. Not only is this my idea but it also comes through Aristotle, the 14th Dalai Lama, Dr. Wayne Dyer.

But I just recently had a question from one of my blog readers whose first initial is A. She asked how to be happy and how do I make others happy? This is an important two part question. So, I’ll take one part at a time.

Happiness is found within. It costs nothing but time. It gives a lifetime of joy. You find happiness by making contact with what I call The Cosmic Consciousness. (Others will name this God. It doesn’t matter what you call it, so long as you make contact with it. But don’t get caught up in all the baggage that “God” sometimes brings with it.) Find a method of meditation that fits you. (If you need a reference, I recommend the Self-Realization Fellowship. http://www.yogananda-srf.org/ I receive no recompense for this endorsement.) Follow that method of meditation as it leads you into yourself. There, within yourself, you will find connection to the Cosmic Consciousness. You will know yourself and all others as part of the Cosmic Consciousness and that will bring you unspeakable and ever-enduring happiness.

Then you live out your life by being in the world what your happiness within shows you. You will find bliss within and you will beam your bliss out into the world.

Which does lead, naturally, to A’s second question. How do I make others happy? You can’t. That’s right, I said you cannot make others happy. No one can make another happy. Each person is responsible for their own happiness. No one makes another sad or glad. Each person is in charge of how they feel.

But the best thing you can do to help others be happy is twofold. First, when it is appropriate, share what you havebe happy found about happiness through meditation. Share how you felt before you discovered happiness and how you feel now.

Second, as you have found happiness you will have discovered that we are all one. There is no separation between us and all others. So, as you do acts and words of loving-kindness in your daily life, you will help steer others toward happiness. They will see in you what they want for themselves And when you act in the way of loving-kindness toward them, they will seek their own happiness.

It really is as simple as this. Remember, however, you cannot make another happy. And another cannot make you happy. You are responsible for your own happiness. The other is responsible for his or her own happiness. But you can meditate to find your happiness. You can act with loving-kindness to encourage others in the direction of happiness.

Thanks to A for her question. Remember, the meaning of life is to be happy.

The Meaning of Life Involves You Finding Happiness

The meaning of life involves you finding happiness. To find happiness you have to know that you are connected to Something greater than yourself. See if this illustration relates.

In front of you there is a delicious looking cherry pie. (Substitute your favorite flavor of pie, if cherry is not. Cherry is my favorite.) Someone then cuts a generous piece out of the whole pie and serves it to a person sitting at table with you. You can ask yourself, how do I know that is cherry pie? (Go ahead, humor me for a moment.) The obvious answer is that it is a piece of cherry pie. The answer is so obvious that is seems almost silly to ask the question. Yet the entire process, asking the question and receiving the answer is of great significance.

That piece of pie we know of as cherry because it came from a whole cherry pie. Like came from like. Well, I say that

Cherry Pie, mmmmmmmmmm

Cherry Pie, mmmmmmmmmm

God is All in All, The Source of All That Is. I say that you (and I) came from God. If God is All, then you are part of the All. You are the All, so to speak. Like coming from like. There is no difference between the piece of the pie and the entire pie, except size.

God is everything and is in everything. Therefore, you are in God and God in you. No difference except maybe size. Do you see what value you have? You are the hands, feet, eyes, ears, etc., of The Source of All That Is. What The Source does, you do. What The Source Is, you are. Do you see the connection?

In this connection is happiness to be found, and, therefore, the meaning of life. You are here for one over-arching, all-important reason. To be happy.

There is no conflict in The Source. The Source is total harmony. The Source is in complete resonance with Itself. In other words, The Source is completely Happy. Your reason for being here is the same. Like after like.

The meaning of your life is to be happy. The reason you exists is to be happy. This is just the first part. There is much more to know about happiness. We’ll explore that together over the next several blogs. But from this happiness comes all your reason to be here. Through happiness you answer the question of “Why am I here?”

Understand today that you are part of the Great Harmony, the Great Happiness. From that base or start, all the rest of life flows into an endless stream of meaning, the meaning of life.
