Sharing the Meaning of Life from "This" Perspective

The Reason You Are Alive and What That Has To Do With Meaning and Happiness

You have asked “Why am I alive?” in one form or another. The answer has to do with what you do with meaning and happiness.

Everyone wonders at some point in their lives, perhaps at several points in their lives, why they are alive. What am I doing here (on earth)?

Here is the answer, as I see it, in three words: expression, animation and manifestation. (That these three words rhyme is fortunate.)

The remainder of the text for this post follows immediately after this video pane:

We need to start with what many name God. Please drop all baggage you may be carrying that contains the term “God.”

Let me give a working definition of “God” here that we might start fresh. God is a Singularity. The Singularity. It may be said that God is the Universe – The Whole of It. The Entirety.

As such then God cannot do anything but be everything. God cannot be in relationship to anything else because there is nothing else. But by terms that we humans understand, being The Only means there can be no relationships.

Without relationships, entities cannot not define themselves. God cannot say “I am thus and you are such.” In God’s life there is no “such” because there is no other.

So we came into being, through the mind of God. (I believe it may be that there are other sentient beings in the Universe wherein God may be found as well. But we are dealing with humans only in this writing.)

What then is the reason we are alive? We are to be the expression, animation and manifestation of God. We give what we term as “life” to God. We can be in relationship to other things and beings.

Without our expression, God would be silent, eternally silent. But we can sing and dance and speechify and paint and write and sculpt. We can do all manner of benign and malignant things to declare our aliveness. By so doing we enliven God.

Because we have the largest mental capacity of any beings we know, we can genuinely say that we have the greatest range of animation possible as well. We can be the most alive of all the species on this earth.

By that I mean we can be the most diversified in terms of liveliness of all else upon this planet. In our dancing and speechifying, etc., we can give the widest range of possibilities. Because we have this potential it behooves us to demonstrate it as best we can.

We do not yet know the limits of our possibilities.

We are also the most manifesting creatures that we know. Because God is The Singularity, God cannot manifest, or be incarnate outside of Itself, for there is no “outside of Itself” when it comes to God.

But because we have the capacities of expression and animation, we can be the most manifesting creatures. We can make the most things and or experiences real, tangible, incarnate.

That is part of our job description – to make things and thoughts real. We can take the thoughts of God and make them “appear” within The Singularity.

Here are the reasons you are alive:
1. To be the expression of The Singularity.
2. To be the animation of The Singularity.
3. To be the manifestation of The Singularity.

What does this have to do with meaning and happiness?

When you make constant and deep connection with The Singularity, you plug into The Singularity. You realize your place within The Singularity. In that meld you find the meaning of your life. Expression, animation, manifestation all give you meaning. That meaning has a one word expression – happiness. To know your meaning is to know happiness.

You then show your happiness to yourself and to others by expressing yourself, animating who you are by actions in the world, and by manifesting what The Singularity is through your own life.

There you have the whole package: meaning, happiness, purpose.

You are alive to be what The Singularity cannot.

Get to it.

For Your Own Happiness Remember That You Are Alive

Mitch said, “I am restless, Dr. Bob. I wake up in the middle of the night and am wide awake. What could be happening with me?”

“Do you get physical exercise?” I asked.

The rest of the text for this post follows immediately after this video pane:

“Three times a week to the gym, each time about an hour and a half in aerobics and resistance training. Pleasantly tired when finished each time,” Mitch said.

Mitch did look physically fit. He was medium height with a solid build. Perhaps he was thirty five.

“Everything O.K. at home?”

“I am not aware of any major problems. Oh, the small things with work and kids. Nothing to keep me awake that I am aware of.”

He looked at me. I looked at him. I took a shot in the dark. “When was the last time you expressed yourself?” I asked.

Mitch asked in return, “Expressed myself? I don’t get what you mean, Dr. Bob.”

“I mean when was the last time you wrote a love poem to your wife? When was the last time you made up a bedtime story for your three kids? When was the last time you air-directed a symphony orchestra?”

“Whoa,” he said. “Where are you going with this?”

“I am not sure, just a hunch. But what about the answers to my questions?”

Mitch thought for about 20 seconds and then said, “I haven’t done any of those things in a long time. I still don’t know where you are going with this.”

“We all have spirits that need expression, Mitch. If we don’t exercise that expression, those spirits become restless. Some people just go along until their spirits become dull and empty, no longer asking to participate in life. Sometimes this non-participation leads to restlessness. Awake at odd hours. No forward life-progress. Sounds like maybe you have this affliction.”

“Affliction? You mean I am sick?” asked Mitch.

“No. I mean that live was meant to be lived. To be happy is to know you are alive by trying to expand your life. By trying to change. By trying to grow. Life is overcoming obstacles or dangers. Life is getting out of your comfort zone. Sound interesting?”

Mitch developed a small smile with his lips and eyes. Maybe I had hit a resonating chord within him. It was only a guess. It was a place to start.

“You think I am restless and can’t sleep well because I haven’t expressed my spirit enough?” he asked.

“I think it a real possibility. When was the last time you took some time and did express the fact that you are happy to be alive?”

His smile grew wider. “I can’t remember. I used to invent stories for the kids all the time. How did you know I air-directed symphonies? I can’t remember the last time I pushed the walls of my comfort zone in any way. Wow.”

“All of us need to embrace our lives and take every opportunity to expand them through the expression of happiness. The Very Spirit of the Universe seeks to express itself through you and your reaching beyond the ordinary.”

“My fidgetiness may be because I haven’t told my kids stories recently? That simple,” Mitch asked.

“Well, not quite that simple,” I said. “But making up stories is a way of giving tongue to your spirit. It can be gardening, photography, videography, learning a new language, Tai Chi, skydiving, lifting the next heavier weight. Express yourself.”
Mitch said he would try my suggestions. I reminded him he was the best developer of his own spirit; he needed to think of his own ideas to fulfill his spirit. We made an appointment for two weeks in the future.

When Mitch came to see me again, I could tell immediately he was much more rested than when I had seen him last. He told me he was developing his spirit and was sleeping better. He felt happier as well, he said.

I bid him come again if he needed more. To this point, he is doing fine without further help, as far as I can see.

Dear reader: the Supreme Spirit seeks manifestation through you and your spirit. When you leave this aspect of your life unfulfilled, you will find yourself restless. The very phenomenon of being alive and happy is to participate in enlargement, variety and advancement. Do so beginning now.

The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and the Party We had Hoped For Didn’t Happen But We Can Still Dance 86

If you prefer text to video, please see the entire text just below this video pane (or is that pain? :-) )

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjAkVebzmhM

In the annals of the meaning of life and being happy, here’s one for the book of records. This person, whom I know well, but cannot name because she is too close to me, had life all planned out. Graduate college, marry, have two kids, boy and girl, buy a nice piece of property with an adequate house. Using that nice property, she would have family get-togethers on a regular basis. Everyone would grow comfortable and older together. In other words, following her plan, she would be happy and have the meaning of life all sown up.

Well, it didn’t quite work that way. She lost two grandmothers in the same weekend. Lost the remaining grandfather just a few years later. Lost one of her siblings to a car accident. Lost the other sibling to an estranged relationship that last ten years. Started a business and was doing well until the Great Recession hit. In short, all her plans did not work out. She was planning a great life-party, but even the DJ did not show up.

Now what was she going to do? Some things worked out. Her two children are fine citizens. The piece of land she and her husband own is still there and appreciating in value. There are investments that will grow again. But the family ties and lines of communication she had hoped for were broken through one disaster after another.

She can stand around at a dud party. Or she can dance anyway. Those are basically the two choices she has. The jury is still out on the verdict. Maybe sometime in the future I can let you know how things turned out.

You have the same two choices. Your life may not be the party so expected it to be, so far anyway. You thought that the party itself was going to give your life meaning. The party itself was going to be your cause for happiness. But the party went poop. Now what?

You can stand around and mope in various ways. Like lashing out at loved ones because things aren’t going well. Taking up bad habits like drinking or running around. You can just give up on life and its meaning and your happiness.

Or you can find a way to dance. While we are still in this life, we can dance. This needs a change of mind, however. You have got to will yourself, at least at first, to dance. I know, I know, you don’t want to get out of that figurative chair and start to move to imaginary music. You have to will yourself to your feet, real or figurative. You have to look for a rhythm within yourself that you can keep time with your feet as you move. You may even have to imagine a partner with whom to dance at this stage in your life.

In other words, you have to dance to your own rhythms and themes. But in that attempt to dance, you will find something you didn’t know you had. A reservoir of happiness. When you will to dance, you will necessarily tap into this reservoir of happiness and meaning. This reservoir is as big as the Universe, for it is the Universe. Happiness does not depend on the outward circumstances of life. Happiness and the meaning of life are what you say it is for you. Once you have discovered your everlasting connection to the Divine Meaning of Life, and constantly tap into it, draw from its reserves, you can dance. “I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, and I’ll meet you there in there, wherever you may be, I’ll meet you there in the dance, said he.”

These two basic choices are yours, always. One: stand around and mope and curse the day you were born. Two: find the will you already possess to dance up the meaning of life, which is to be happy.

Life may not have turned out to be the party your expected, but while you are alive, you can dance anyway.
