How do we have civilization, even civilized acts from person to person, if we do not have a God enforcing rules by the threat of hell? We learn to live as we ought. We learn to live as if all we do and say either serves us well or ill. The choice of being served well is always ours.

For many hundreds of years, perhaps thousands, some of the religious organizations of the world, especially in the Western hemisphere, used the threat of Hell to get people to behave. This even went to so far as to officially remove reincarnation as a doctrine so as not to give people “another chance” at living their lives as “they should.”

MORE TEXT AFTER VIDEO PANE

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIcEBTUR_qU

In the 21st century, many people have dropped their belief in Hell. Even the Roman Catholic Church has dropped its doctrine of God imposing a place of torture that lasts for eternity. Of course, most of the Eastern hemisphere’s religious organizations or philosophies had never believed in Hell.

So how are people to be kept in order? What incentive do we have to behave? We teach people to be self serving. What you do comes back to you. Like dropping a pebble in a small pond. Watch ripples undulate from the pebble-drop. But them watch those same ripples repeat back upon themselves, to the very spot where the pebble was first dropped. This demonstrates cause and effect.

See that? Cause and effect. If I do something, the cause, it will come back to me, the effect. This has been understood for thousands of years in the East. Even so much so that the idea of reincarnation has within its insight that a person may have to have repeated lives in order to work out this cause and effect. This is often given the name Karma. This is not punishment. We are simply taught about the Universe being constructed in such a way that what one does, has a very definite effect upon you.

That effect may not happen in the next instant. But it will happen. And the greater or more potent the cause, the larger or more powerful the effect will be.

So, we teach people, actually children from a very early age, that what you do comes back upon you. Do good or well, good will come back upon you. One of my own favorite proverbs, something I made up myself is this: “The evil that men do comes back upon them.”

Of course, the positive is just as true: “The good that men do comes back upon them.”

We teach people to behave by showing them that there is cause and effect, by living this truth ourselves. There is no God telling us we are going to Hell if we don’t behave. We will put ourselves into a hell if we misbehave.

I imagine, however, that this shift is going to be difficult to implement. Religious organizations will have to change drastically. Knowing what I do about religious organizations, this may take generations to happen. In the meantime, more and more Western hemisphere people will turn to Eastern hemisphere philosophies and religions that teach cause and effect.

Is cause and effect self serving? You bet it is. But when we serve ourselves well and know that there are consequences for those actions, then everyone benefits.

Do you want to be known of as a good person? Do you want to do good? Relax. Doing the best you can in the moment is all you need concern yourself with.

Part of the meaning of life, which is to be happy, means looking at yourself as a good person. However, most of us have been taught that if we do something wrong, we’ll be punished. This punishment comes from an outside source.

Suppose there was no outside source of punishment? We would only have the consequences of our actions and words. What happens to us because of what we say or do, is up to us. It is up to us because we have power over what we say and do. Suppose you are not paying attention to what you are doing and accidentally place your palm on a hot burner; you will get burned. The burn is not a punishment; it is a natural consequence of putting your palm in the wrong place.

Here is the video version of this blog/vlog. If you prefer only text, then skip this pane (pain?) and continue below it.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCeLQjOI3Rs

Whatever you do or say will have natural consequences. Your palm burned on the hot range top. But you immediately can vow within yourself never to be so careless again. The consequences of any action can immediately help you start over again. Start over at being a more careful person, a better acting person, a good person. You are not stuck in what caused the adverse consequences of any situation.

You have to get away from believing there is a force that punishes you for wrong actions. I believe that there is no such force. This is where you need to shift your belief system. Change your world-view.

I believe, and am not alone in this belief, that what we name God has made the Universe free. In other words, God does not worry about you doing anything in particular. Yes. Yes. Religions have taught us that God is keeping track of our every wrong move. Those religions have taught that we will be punished for our sins. But if the Universe is free, then actions are actions. In a free Universe there is no judgment, there is only natural consequences, like a burnt hand.

So, what do you do? You do what you believe needs doing in the moment. You are the one who needs to weigh the consequences against your contemplated action. Doing your best in this moment is all you ever need expect of yourself. Considering the consequences, you act as you think best. Will you make mistakes? Yes. Because of those mistakes, will there be negative consequences? Possibly. But you will have done nothing wrong or evil. You did the best you could. That is all you need ever ask of yourself. Did I do the best I could? If the answer is yes, then you are a good person. You can relax. You may have to live with consequences, but you need never feel or believe you are being punished.

Here is my definition of a “good person”: acting as best you can in this moment. The meaning of life, to be happy, is also acting as best you can in this moment.

When something bad happens to you, do you ask "What did I do to deserve this?" Maybe you do not deserve, maybe you do.

The meaning of life and to be happy have something to do with karma. Karma is simply, yet completely, defined as “the effects of one’s actions.” Like 2 + 2 = 5. Or like when you open a window and the breeze blows in. Yes, I deliberately chose illustrations that are innocent. Because karma does not always bring bad consequences.

Further, karma is not punishment for something you have done or not done. You must see this. It is simply the effects of one’s actions. When something bad happens to you, it may be, I repeat, may be caused by something you did. But it is in no way punishment. Nor is it, then, reward for something you have done right. It is like blowing out the flame on a burning candle. You blow air out your lungs toward the flame and if the air volume is sufficient and forceful enough, the flame is extinguished.

That does not mean, however, that someone else cannot inflict pain upon you. Because that pain is inflicted does not necessarily mean you have done anything wrong. People are free. They will do what they want. Sometimes people do bad things. The hurt you feel from such events may not have been caused by what you did or did not do.

So, you have got to live with the consequences, effects, of what you do or say. That’s karma. But when you feel hurt it does not mean, absolutely, you have done anything to deserve that pain.

There are those who say that the effects of what we do can be carried over several or many lifetimes to be worked out. In other words, one could have done something so heinous in another life that the effects of that act are still being worked out in this life. And maybe it takes more than one lifetime to work them through.

What I say is this: You deserve the best. You are a child of The Creative Spirit; you are spirit yourself. As such all the best is yours, as long as you don’t stand in the way of it. When pain comes your way, as it does for all of us, you haven’t inescapably done something to cause it. Yes, it could be the working out of the effects of some past behavior of yours. Or, it could be that some free human being has caused this pain.

Don’t automatically assume you deserve hurt. DO assume the you deserve the best. The effects of your actions will work themselves out. But the affliction you feel at any moment is not inescapably of your doing.

The meaning of life, to be happy, has to do with accepting that you deserve the very best. Which you do. Believe it. Live it.

And I invite you to pick up more info about deservedness. Sign up for Free Instant Access to some of my Force-Source-Resources. Pick out the one that says “All The Best – You Deserve It,” or any or all of the other freebies. Remember, one bit of information can give you a superior point of activation. Just click here and you’ll be on your way.
