The Meaning of Life, To Be Happy, and Your Entire Life Is in This Moment 87

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

The meaning of life, to be happy, means I need to be conscious of this next step I am taking.

Here is the video of this blog. If you prefer just text, please see the ideas just below the video pane. I start over with the text for convenience sake.

The meaning of life, to be happy, means I need to be conscious of this next step I am taking. One of the most difficult mental and spiritual activities I undertake is living in this moment. I know from years of study and more years of experience that this is the only moment I have. My entire life’s journey is contained in the step I take in this, the here and now. Every choice I made, every decision I accepted, culminates in this instant.

So I need to be taking as correct a step as I can. The only way to do that is to be conscious of what I am doing, saying, thinking in this moment. In the process that we call living, each activity I have done in the past leads to this moment. Every possible step I can take in the next moment is a collaboration of all that has occurred in my life from the past. But, neither the past nor the future exist for me in this moment, in this step.

It does not mean I am cut off from the flow of time. It means I have another example of the non-existence of time. For I am free to choose, in this moment, what I will do, given what I have done. Confusing? You bet.

Let’s try this: The past is gone as we measure time. The future has not yet come, as we measure time. What’s left? Of course, this moment. Only. So, everything I am or hope to be is contained here and now, only. Mentally you can see this as someone taking a strip of paper and cutting out a central section of it and discarding the two ends. What is left is now.

Therefore, you are unencumbered by the past, just as the piece of the strip of paper that represents the past is discarded. Similarly, you are unencumbered by the future; that piece of paper is gone as well. So, you make of what is left, this moment, just what you will. You can make it happy. You can make it meaningful. As long as you are conscious of what you are doing. You become conscious of what you are doing instantly by placing your attention on this moment only.

Yes, this is a tough concept to get your mind around. Yet it is so simple. Live in this moment. It is the only moment you have. Make it meaningful. Make it happy. Because you are unencumbered by past or future, you are totally free to make it whatever you want it to be. No matter what is happening in your world, you make this next step your entire life. For it is. And that is one of the insights into the meaning of life, to be happy.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and God I Just Want Happiness in My Life (0079)

Video and Text: The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and God I Just Want Happiness in My Life

Sanchez came through the office door. He was a migrant laborer who had been stopping and working every summer in the area for more years than I can remember. He came regularly to a coaching association I ran. We were acquainted but little more. As you can imagine his skin was deeply tanned and weathered from years of outdoors labor. He was cheerful and always pleasant. I was told he was a hard and dedicated worker, sending money home all the time.

“What’s up, amigo?” I said. Sanchez accepted my very poor Spanish with an indulgent half smile.

“Oh, God, I just want happiness in my life.” He came straight to his point. “I know happiness is there. But I can’t find it.” His English, on the other hand, was excellent. “Doc, it ought to be easy. I just want happiness in my life.”

We talked to see if there were any unusual impediments to Sanchez having happiness in his life. There were none that we could, together, discover. So, I got right done to business.

“Do you pray?” I asked him. Yes, I know this is a very personal question for a man. But there is no sense in beating around the bush if someone comes, male or female, for an answer. They don’t want a long series of sessions for psychoanalysis. (Nothing wrong with psychoanalysis.) They want to walk out of the office with a way to change their lives.

He told me he did pray, almost every day. I told him that he then had the beginnings of finding happiness in his life. He simply needed to turn the prayer time into rumination-time. (The term rumination-time caught his attention, as it was meant to.) He needed to start this time by saying just what he said to me, “God, I just want happiness in my life.” Then, as if praying, let his mind think about what happiness would mean in his life. (If you think this is a form a meditation, you are correct. But Sanchez didn’t need to be bothered with that idea.)

We tried it, silently, in the office. I had him ruminate for about 5 minutes. I asked him to gently come back into the room. “What happened?”

He said, “I found that I already had lots of happiness in my wife and kids. That my work was honorable. Just before you called me back, I realized I already had some happiness in my life. I just had not seen it before.”

I told him to do this kind of ruminating at least five times a week for at least five minutes each time. I reminded him that God was the one he was contacting. It was in God and through God that he would find his happiness.

Too simply? You tell me. It worked for Sanchez. I believe it will work for you.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and What Did I Do to Deserve This?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The meaning of life and to be happy have something to do with karma. Karma is simply, yet completely, defined as “the effects of one’s actions.” Like 2 + 2 = 5. Or like when you open a window and the breeze blows in. Yes, I deliberately chose illustrations that are innocent. Because karma does not always bring bad consequences.

Further, karma is not punishment for something you have done or not done. You must see this. It is simply the effects of one’s actions. When something bad happens to you, it may be, I repeat, may be caused by something you did. But it is in no way punishment. Nor is it, then, reward for something you have done right. It is like blowing out the flame on a burning candle. You blow air out your lungs toward the flame and if the air volume is sufficient and forceful enough, the flame is extinguished.

That does not mean, however, that someone else cannot inflict pain upon you. Because that pain is inflicted does not necessarily mean you have done anything wrong. People are free. They will do what they want. Sometimes people do bad things. The hurt you feel from such events may not have been caused by what you did or did not do.

So, you have got to live with the consequences, effects, of what you do or say. That’s karma. But when you feel hurt it does not mean, absolutely, you have done anything to deserve that pain.

There are those who say that the effects of what we do can be carried over several or many lifetimes to be worked out. In other words, one could have done something so heinous in another life that the effects of that act are still being worked out in this life. And maybe it takes more than one lifetime to work them through.

What I say is this: You deserve the best. You are a child of The Creative Spirit; you are spirit yourself. As such all the best is yours, as long as you don’t stand in the way of it. When pain comes your way, as it does for all of us, you haven’t inescapably done something to cause it. Yes, it could be the working out of the effects of some past behavior of yours. Or, it could be that some free human being has caused this pain.

Don’t automatically assume you deserve hurt. DO assume the you deserve the best. The effects of your actions will work themselves out. But the affliction you feel at any moment is not inescapably of your doing.

The meaning of life, to be happy, has to do with accepting that you deserve the very best. Which you do. Believe it. Live it.
