		<description>The term &#039;gnostics&#039; is often applied to the small group you mention above, but the term itself is much older as you infer.  The word is Greek but takes it&#039;s root from the word &#039;gign?skein&#039;, which is of Indo-European origin according to the American Heritage dictionary.

It is referred to in the Aryan Vedas, dating from betwen 3000 and 2500 B.C, which places them as contemporaries of the Egytians.

And further research shows the term&#039; &#039;Know Thyself&#039; (translated of course) was etched above the entrance to the Temple of On in Heliopolis, Egypt, long before the Greeks made their impression on history.
