The Meaning of Life and Why Am I Here?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The meaning of life can be complicated and simple at the very same time. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons it is so confusing to many folks. It may be that’s the reason so few actually look at the meaning of their lives.

But when something in life causes you to stop, even for a moment, and ask, “Why am I here?” you begin to ponder.

Then, I believe, one of two things occurs, usually. Either you take the time to consider. Or you hide from that consideration by going on with whatever you were doing. Or you quickly invent something to put up a wall so as not to have to consider.

You need not hide. You can courageously consider why you are here? Usually the question comes up when facing something momentous in your life. A career change. A relationship change. Someone’s death. An emotional dead-end. These and many more are serious and anxiety producing thoughts. But their foundation, their basis, is the underlying challenge of knowing why you are here.

Without going into too much detail which you may not want or need at this juncture in your life, you are here to dreamstime_10728665experience. There is an Energy in the Universe (some name it God) that is throbbing with life. But it is unseen, unexperienced life. It literally vibrates all across the spectrum of vibration. You might say it is unseen and unseeable. Well, the Energy has a need to express itself. It has a need to experience what it is. Therefore, it caused pulsations to move to certain speeds where they may be visible, at least to humans. One of those pulsations developed into humans.

We are the manifestations of Energy manifesting itself in the visible. Well, fine. What does that have to do with you? We are the ones who then experience what can be experienced that the Energy be more than vibration.

Don’t get me wrong. The Energy is not using us for Its own selfish ends. The Energy has given us freedom to choose whatever experiences we think we need. No conditions attached. No punishments attend. You are free.

So, the reason you are here is to experience on behalf of the Energy. But with no strings and no punishments, you may joyful go through life doing that which contributes to making you happy. You are here to experience happiness. You are here to be happy.

When you do or be the things that help you feel the happiest, you are fulfilling your purpose in this life. Then you make that experiencing as large or as little as you wish.

Can’t be. Too simple, you say. Nay, this experiencing of life is as simple or complex as YOU wish to make. The Energy accepts all experiencing, without judgment or condemnation. So, go to it. Make the most of your life knowing that you are to experience life. The best tribute you may give The Energy and yourself is a life well lived. Start now.

The Meaning of Life and What Am I To Do?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

There was a time not too long ago, as time goes, when the answer to the question, “What am I to do?” was easily answered. Just 200 years ago, one’s career path was mapped out for you. If you were male, you did what your father did. Or you apprenticed yourself to someone else who taught you a trade. If you were female, you were almost certainly destined to do what your mother did.

My wife tells me that as little as 40 years ago, in the United States, there were about 4 choices for women: housewife, nurse, teacher, secretary. My wife says that thinking beyond this was almost incredible.

But today, at least in the western and northern quadrant of the world, plus Australia, the choices are many and varied for both genders. So what does one choose to be? And how to find that path?

First, one discover what the meaning of life is for oneself. I think the meaning of life is just waiting to be captured by you. You just look inside and see what your greatest joy would be. (We’ll get to the outward expression of this in just a bit.) I think your greatest joy would be, to be happy. Others have said this as well; to name drop just a bit, the following have said that the meaning of life is to be happy: Aristotle, the 14th Dalai Lama, Dr Wayne Dyer. And you find that happiness by being in touch with The Source of All That Is. When you align yourself with the harmony found in The Source, you will “see” many things. Not the least of which is happiness. Happiness that comes from all the connection you will ever need in The Source. You make this contact by being in prayer or meditation or quiet time or deep concentration.

Second, you listen to you yourself speaking through this bliss. What is it that The Source is saying you might find further bliss in doing? I am not and cannot give you precisely what you need to do to continue your bliss. You will need to discover that yourself. Anything imposed upon you from outside influences, against your knowledge and/or will, is at least incomplete and at most deliberately false.

Now, sometimes folks want this answer about continuing their bliss in the substantive world immediately. They want one session of meditation to facilitate the answer. Rarely ever happens. You need to persist in your journeys inward; you need to experiment with what seems to be suggested to you.

You’ll know you are on the right track when it feels right and good within you. Literally within you. Your body will answer your questions with feelings of joy, wonder and love. This is bliss manifest in your flesh.

Third, when you have some answers, or one answer, try it. Beam your bliss into the world. Take what joy your have found in your inner quest and experience it in the world. Now, please, understand that the first one may not be THE one. Maybe not even the third experiencing. But as you experience more and more bliss as you experiment, you will come close to finding what you are to do with your life. It will absolutely right and good to you, in the flesh.

One, two, three: 1. Find happiness, 2. Listen to your bliss, 3. Experiment. These are three steps to know what you are to do with your life.

By the way, this process can begin at any age of life. I myself have had at least three times when the projecting of my bliss into the world has change. The latest at about age 62. The earliest I can recall at about age 14.

So, get started now. Do what needs to be done in your life so you can be blissful in your attendance upon the living of your life.

The Meaning of Life – Is That Too Hard To Deal With?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

The blog titled “The Meaning of Life Involves Finding Your Happiness” (Oct. 24, 2009), received a very interesting and thought provoking comment recently. I thank Curtis for the comment and hope you will visit his blog: http://curtischappell.com/blog In the interest of your time I will quote the comment here: “I believe for most people the simple question of,’ what is the meaning of life?’, is simply too difficult to contemplate due to the philosophical nature of the question.

You mention God several times, and tie this concept into ‘the source’ which is understandable, but the essence of the question takes God out of the equation, due to its personal nature, unless a person feels their entire life is driven by a power higher than themselves.

But that’s a cop-out isn’t it? The question is asking an individual to step outside 2000 years of dogma fed to them from the pulpit, and answer the question for themselves.

The average person is lost without some sort of guide, and God fits nicely into this requirement. My blog and upcoming book attempts to put this power back into the hands (and mind) of the individual.

What is the meaning of life? It is the search for our inner self.

The Gnostics stated this concept very simply…”Know Thyself.”

Write On! Curtis” http://curtischappell.com/blog

Allow me to take these points one at a time. Many people never contemplate the meaning of life, true. However, there are many more who do. Witness my more than 38 years as a clergy wherein I found the single most asked question was some form of “What is the meaning of my life?” Beyond those decades however, is the constant raising of the question on Twitter. Of course, most folks will not want the philosophical answer. They want the simplest answer possible that they may understand it. Therefore, I say, with Aristotle, the Dalai Lama, Dr. Wayne Dyer, that the meaning of life is to be happy.

Then, when we enter the realm of quantum physics, we discover that it is the Universe’s desire to be in harmony. Harmony can be another term for happiness. Surely when someone is in harmony within themselves, they are happy.

Truly, I mention God several times in the blogpost in question. I believe that there is an Organizing Intelligence, a Cosmic Consciousness, behind, or all through, the Universe. But I am not alone in that thought. Even the great Buckminster Fuller said, “I know there is a God.”

Now, you might think that because I was a religionist during my full time career as a clergy, that I am still a religionist. Nothing could further from the truth. I believe, with those in the quantum physics who do, that there is a Cosmic Consciousness that Is the Universe. I do feel that everyone is propelled or energized, but not driven, by the Engine some name God. I do not believe in an entity that looks suspiciously like a human being with a long white beard who sits in the cosmos someplace and directs the traffic of the Universe. I do not believe that we are separate from this Source. I believe we all are part of It and It is part of all of us. And yes, I have stepped outside the dogma of 2,000 years and seen for myself. I believe that everyone is capable of making up their own mind. Yes, I believe that God is found within every individual human. And The Source can be contacted through quiet time, prayer, meditation, deep concentration or a combination of these and others as well.

It is when this connection, or contact, is made, that we humans find the thrumming harmony of the Universe – happiness in other words. Not through dogma but through devotion to being in conscious awareness of The Source. There is where we find the inner self. The inner self is totally free to determine how it will respond to The Source. The problem si that most people do not know that The Source can be freely and safely contacted. By “safely” I mean no demands or punishments will be visited upon one who wishes to be in connection.

I do encourage you, dear reader, to look up Curtis’s blog and book and see if what he has to say fits you. (I get no money for this suggestion.) http://curtischappell.com/blog I believe Curtis is right when he says that the search for meaning is the search for the inner self. But I believe the inner self is connected to The Source. And when that connection is consciously made, happiness is to be found.

There is one error that I feel needs correcting in Curtis’s comment. Sorry. The term “Know Thyself,” is much older than the Gnostics. If by Gnostics you mean those who flourished soon after Jesus of Nazareth and claimed to have special knowledge of God. This knowledge given only to those fully initiated into the following. “Know Thyself” was inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi long before the Nazarene was with us.

I say to Curtis, returning the compliment, “Write on.”
