Sharing the Meaning of Life from "This" Perspective

The Meaning of Life Second Half of the Equation

I finally found the second half of an equation that goes right along with the meaning of life. Joseph Campbell, one who spent his life studying the myths of humankind, said, “Follow your bliss.” I’ve had this half of the equation for a number of years. But I thought that there must be more to it than that. For following one’s bliss is perfectly fine but I believe it must lead somewhere. So just yesterday it dawned on me as I was looking at the card on my wall that is titled Follow Your Bliss. Beam Your Bliss.
I mean one can gather up one’s bliss through contact with The Source of All That Is, finding a worthy vocation, finding a befitting life mate, etc. But if you’re like me, sitting in meditation, for example, is only half the story. I feel even more complete when I am sharing what I’ve discovered in meditation and through various other kinds of study. In other words, I need to experience what I’m feeling in and through meditation. I must get out of myself and share with the world.

This getting out of myself defines me and helps me be as The Source of All That Is in the Universe. The Source of All That Is is a spiritual being. In order to experience Itself, It had to go beyond the spiritual and experience. In order to do that The Source of All That Is put forth the Universe. You and I are part of the universe, essential parts. And in a figurative and literal way, The Source of All That Is beamed forth Its energy, Its vibrations to “make” the things we see. (This is well demonstrated in quantum physics.)
So you take what you are in Follow Your Bliss and Beam Your Bliss into the corporal world. In other words, what you are on the inside “becomes” what you are and/or what you do on the outside.

So I have the equation one side of which is Follow Your Bliss = Beam Your Bliss, the second side of the equation. Mathematicians might say that this is a balanced equation. I say it is one way to a balanced life wherein you hone, for yourself, the meaning of life.

“To Be Happy” is the Meaning of Life.

“To be happy” is the meaning of life. But the simple phrase, “to be happy,” is like a many faceted gemstone. When one looks at a faceted gemstone, many surfaces, many angles, many depths can be seen all at once. At first glance what appears to be a beautiful stone, say an emerald, my favorite, has a great deal more profundity and might be noticed – at first glance. To grasp the full significance of the gemstone, you need to take some time to examine it. But like so many things in life most of the time a person glances at a beautiful stone, takes in its brilliance and splendor for a second or two, and then moves on with life. Nothing wrong, absolute nothing wrong with moving on with life. But in this instance you might miss something of great value to you if you do not investigate and make your own all the “facets” of the idea of “to be happy.”

The first faceted we must study together is the idea of “to be.” Most of the persons in the world identify each other, and give each other a label, by understanding what they do. Are you a carpenter? A farmer? Stay at home mom? Lawyer? Teacher? Truck driver? Professional athlete? What do you do? Once again and of course, there is nothing necessarily wrong with what you do. But is what you do all of who you are? Many of us get so caught up in what we do that we forget who we are. You have more than one dimension, more than one facet as in a beautiful emerald. Certainly what you do is one important facet of who you are. But how many other facets to you have? And what is the sum total of all your facets and of the depth of your brilliance? You can see that you are more than what you do. There’s more to your being then your job title. It is in the depths of this “more” that you find out who you really are. And when you find out who you really are you can begin to get your way to happiness.

Happiness is the Meaning of Life

The watchwords for these blog posts will be a quote from Aristotle: “Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” (I credit one of the tweeters from http://www.twitter.com for bringing this quote to my attention.) Many years ago a member of my church asked the question, “What is the meaning of life?” With just a few seconds hesitation the answer, for me, blurted out of my mouth. I said, “To be happy.”

The person asking me the question responded to my answer by saying, “That’s too easy.” He then walked away from me. I was, of course, startled by his reaction. So startled in fact that I simply gave up the idea and went on about my life. To quickly and have bought into my parishioners dismissal of the idea. In retirement however, I began to search for something to do, to occupy my time. Through a series of events and explorations of my mind and spirit, I discovered there again the words “to be happy.” I knew that people were searching for the meaning of life. Of course, I’ve been searching for the meaning of life for many decades. Well, with a confluence of events and explorations I came to discover that the meaning of life is, for me, from this perspective, to be happy.

Indeed, some reading this blog may conclude immediately that “to be happy” is simply too simple to be the meaning of life. Let me please try to reassure you that “to be happy” is out of great depth and much usefulness to human being and thence to that human being’s world. In short,”to be happy” is, from this perspective, the meaning of life.
