The watchwords for these blog posts will be a quote from Aristotle: “Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” (I credit one of the tweeters from http://www.twitter.com for bringing this quote to my attention.) Many years ago a member of my church asked the question, “What is the meaning of life?” With just a few seconds hesitation the answer, for me, blurted out of my mouth. I said, “To be happy.”
The person asking me the question responded to my answer by saying, “That’s too easy.” He then walked away from me. I was, of course, startled by his reaction. So startled in fact that I simply gave up the idea and went on about my life. To quickly and have bought into my parishioners dismissal of the idea. In retirement however, I began to search for something to do, to occupy my time. Through a series of events and explorations of my mind and spirit, I discovered there again the words “to be happy.” I knew that people were searching for the meaning of life. Of course, I’ve been searching for the meaning of life for many decades. Well, with a confluence of events and explorations I came to discover that the meaning of life is, for me, from this perspective, to be happy.
Indeed, some reading this blog may conclude immediately that “to be happy” is simply too simple to be the meaning of life. Let me please try to reassure you that “to be happy” is out of great depth and much usefulness to human being and thence to that human being’s world. In short,”to be happy” is, from this perspective, the meaning of life.
