The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and God’s Role in Your Happiness

February 6th, 2010

The Meaning of Life and Cosmic ConsciousnessRegarding the meaning of life and happiness, C. S. Lewis said, “God can’t give us happiness and peace apart from himself because it is not there. There is no such thing.”

First, I think, we need to unpack the word “God.” Some of you reading this post will have no baggage to be carried around about the word “god.” However, others of you may have tremendous bags, loaded with all kinds of meaning: good, bad, indifferent.

Let me develop a singular definition of God for this post, so we are all on the same page at least for this post. God for me is the Cosmic, Universal Consciousness that is the Universe we live in. God is neither male nor female, does not make judgements, loves us all equally, supports and sustains life through unconditionally love. God’s main reason for bringing us into existence is that we might experience on God’s behave. God knows Itself through our experiences. For short, I’ll call God in this post, the Cosmic Consciousness.

Then, I can say that I believe that God can’t have us find happiness unless It, God, is involved. This doesn’t mean that the Cosmic Consciousness imposes Its will upon us. Rather, it means that the invitation to happiness is always open as we find our connection, our bond, with the Cosmic Consciousness. As C. S. Lewis put it, there is no such thing as happiness apart from the Cosmic Consciousness.Vibration

Why? Because the Universe is One harmonious entity. Happiness, after all, might be defined as being in complete harmony with oneself. Peace might be defined in precisely the same way – complete harmony within oneself. Complete Harmony is achieved when you resonate with the Cosmic Consciousness. Indeed, quantum physics shows us that all is vibration, literally. Some vibrations are at such a rate that we can see them. But we know there are other vibrations which we cannot see: infrared, x-ray, gamma ray, etc. Even the Earth, the planet upon which we live, have its own unique vibrational identity. To resonate with these frequencies is to set up or generate sympathetic vibes. To be in tune.

When God is defined as unconditional love, then when we would find unconditional love, know unconditional love, we will set ourselves to vibrating at the same frequencies as the Cosmic Consciousness. In other words, happiness is impossible without bond between the Cosmic Consciousness and yourself. This is not to arbitrary; this is not a demand with an “or else” attached to it. This is an invitation to join the on-going, everlasting party!

You can’t be happy unless you include the Cosmic Consciousness. You will be happy, now and always, when your voluntary bond with the Cosmic Consciousness is secured and steadfast from you side. The meaning of life which is to be happy, consists fully of sympathetic vibration with the Cosmic Consciousness.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and The Need for a Team to Help You Achieve Happiness

February 4th, 2010

The Meaning of Life and The Need for a TeamThe meaning of life is to be happy. The working out of that idea, however, is like a road map of the entire United States of America. There are many ways to get where you want to be going. Many places from which to start; many twists and turns you can take to get “there.” Even ways you can back track or take side trips.

Map of USAThere is at least one method of getting “there” that cannot be left out of your journey. You are not alone on your road. First there are the road builders – those who have pioneered before you. Then there are the road-maintainers – those who labor to keep the road clear so you can move along it. A subset of road-maintainers are those who paint the lane-lines and put up the signs to give you directions (even when you won’t ask for directions).

Vehicle manufacturers came into play somewhere along the line of your journey. Tire makers, engine-makers, assemblers, painters (even if they are robots these days), inspectors, vehicle haulers, etc.

All these partner with you to get you where you are going. Even beyond these physical types, there are the spiritual types. All the saints and sinners who have passed this way before you, testing the road worthiness of the asphalt you drive over. They’ve been this way and pronounced the route good, bad or indifferent. Those sinners and saints who have tested the spiritual pathways to your own destination. These are ready and willing to gather you into the whole. “No man is an island.” (John Donne) Though you cannot see, nor even have been aware of it before this very moment, you are part of the Big Unit, the Universe. Inseparable for all others.

Simply, and in other words, you are never alone. You are part of a team. When you come to recognize and appreciate this team-concept, you’ll be better off. You stand on the shoulders of countless generations of humans. You are one of the foundation stones for those yet to be born.

So, when you are feeling cut off from all human contact because of crushing circumstances in your life, remember, you are part of a TEAM.

You

have not done something that no one else ever has. Your experiences have been repeated time and again by thousands if not millions of people. You are separated, physically, no more than 6 degrees from every other human being. Spiritually you are never and have never been separated from any other sentient being.

Know that the entire team is pulling for you, even if it seems right now that they are not. They are cheering you on because they are in the same game, the Game of Life. To know and practice the meaning of life, to be happy, is to realize you are part of The Universal, Cosmic, Everlasting, Inseparable, TEAM.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and The Need for a Technique to Find that Happiness

February 2nd, 2010

Happiness 101

The meaning of life is to be happy. But no one ever taught you how. It was simply assumed you knew how, or would learn how as you grew older. The problem was and is, very few people know the techniques of being happy, so they can’t pass them along.

You are not stuck anymore, not knowing how to be happy. I am here to help. You need no tools. You don’t have to buy special clothes or outfits. No special text books or courses. (Although there are lots of good courses on the Internet on how to meditate. Google them.)

Here it is, plain and simple. Yes, as hinted at in the paragraph just before this one, meditation is the technique most needed to find happiness and the meaning of life. It is so simple that some folks will dismiss it out-of-hand. Don’t be one of those. Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most profound and useful.

Let just take one way of meditating. Some have called reflective meditation. Find a quiet place, where the quiet will last for about 15 minutes. Sit comfortably but not so comfortably that you will tend to fall asleep. (Though falling asleep is one of the gentle hazards of meditation.) Then generate a concept in your mind. Let ’s just use “joy” today.

For about 15 minutes, with your eyes closed, contemplate the concept of joy. What does it mean for you? What does it mean in your life? When was the last time you felt joy? When is the next time you anticipate feeling joy? Do you see how you “roll” it around in your mind, thinking of joy’s many angles and planes. (When you mind wanders, and it will, just gently bring it back to the contemplation of joy. A wandering mind is a natural phenomenon and nothing to be in the least alarmed about.)
Technique
I can almost guarantee that when you will do this kind of reflective meditation about 15 minutes each day, you will obtained for yourself one way to find the meaning of life which is to be happy. Here is a short list of other ideas to reflective meditated upon: gratitude, love, playfulness, peace, freedom, energy, humor, calm.

There is Happiness 101 in nut-shell form. Begin your class today. You are being self-taught, self-graded, and self-graduated. You’re on you way to the meaning of life: to be happy.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and The Need for Time and the Freedom It Brings

January 30th, 2010

The Meaning of Life and The Need for Time and the Freedom It BringsThe meaning of life: to be happy and the need for time is very personal to me. I just got up from a nap. Nice luxury, you say. Sure, that it is. Except for this – the pain does not allow me to sleep enough. I have a very messed up back. My back is ten years older than the rest of me. Which means my back is 75. I have had two back surgeries. The surgeries went well. But the problems are so numerous that I really need more surgery. However, back surgical procedures are always iffy. Even with the best surgeons in the world, the chances are great that there will be further problems down the road.

So, I go to bed at about 12:30 AM., and need to wake up at 5:00 AM. to take pain medication. But I really need also to get out of bed to change the positioning of body enough so as to relieve the pain. (Also, during those night hours, I awake almost every time I have to turn in bed so as not to cause even greater pain.) So I usually meditate from 5:00 to 5:30 AM; then work until 7:30, when I eat my breakfast. After breakfast, it is help

with our two dogs as one is just 17 weeks old and still has house-breaking issues. (And all that almost unbounded energy.)

After this is done, I read until I cannot keep my eyes open and usually sleep between 9:00 and 10:00 AM. Exercise the dogs, eat lunch and then nap from 1:00 to 2:30 or 3:00 PM. Sounds like luxury, right? NOT. Work till supper. Work after supper. Start all over again. Between lack of uninterrupted sleep and the pain medication I never feel rested. The point of this saga?

I feel I have little time. I am with you if you feel you don’t have enough time, for whatever reason. I just wanted you to see that I know how you feel, if you feel you don’t have enough time.

Two things: The great sages have said and say, there will be enough time for everything needful; and make the best of what you do have. I was reading Neale Donald Walsch, of Conversations with God fame, and he said, as 2009 closed, things get done just as there are supposed to. I was amazed. But when I thought it through, I saw some truth. When you are sincere about your life and work, things will get done as they need to. Yes, the things that are truly required in my life – get done. It sounds strange. Feels strange. But I find it to be true. Try it on and see if it works for you too.

Make the best of the time you’ve got. Obviously statement? Maybe. Maybe not. People with limited time sometimes pressure themselves into cramming too much into too little time. They never relax – thinking they don’t have time. Here’s a quote from Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Oliver Wendell Holmes. He was chided for taking a month per year off. He replied, it is said, “I can do 12 months of work in 11, but I can’t do 12 months of work in 12.” (Something like that.) The point is, he was better able to work when he had sufficient rest and relaxation.

If you are resting to be more invigorated when you do work, you have a good plan, in my estimation. In other words, make the best of the time you do have. There are all kinds of tools to be found on the Internet to help you with time management, if you need them. If you are just feeling guilty over not “spending enough time,” maybe you need to stop the guilt-trip. When you do cease to feel guilty about your responsible use of time, you will get more done. I know; that’s where I am now.

Declare your time independence. Just use the time you have wisely. Everything will get done that needs doing. Just look how long God has been working. When you use your time wisely, you find yourself smack in the middle of the meaning of life: to be happy. Why? How? When in connection with God at the core of your being, you find bliss, that bliss is then beamed into the world. One of the ways that happens is through the guilt-free, responsible use of the time you have.

The Meaning of Life: To Be Happy and the Freedom to Do What You Want to Do

January 28th, 2010

Freedom To Do What You Want To DoFred, who was having meaning of life problems, came to my office for an official visit. He was an amiable guy, about 5′ 10″ with thinning black hair, age 46. He kind of plopped in the office chair. I began drawing him out on what he was having trouble with. He just wasn’t happy he said. I asked the usual questions about family, friends, health. He said all those were fine.

When I asked about work, I sensed his personal intensity grow immediately. We had hit the tingling nerve. He was just not happy in his work. I was surprised to hear him say that he could not use his creativity in his job. Bosses wanted exactly as they prescribed, no more, no less. He did a good job of that and even won two promotions over the seven years he had been with the company. But he felt stifled, cut off from himself.

I was surprised because men don’t usually bring up this sort of discomfort. They kept it to themselves thinking that sharing it is unmanly. But this is part of the meaning of life which is to be happy.

When our creative side is thwarted, we cannot express the happiness we carry inside out in the corporal world. Then we will feel as if something is missing. We are missing participation in the meaning of life. This was Fred’s base problem.

His base problem? The problem that was causing all his other meaning of life problems.

Fred asked the question, “What am I to do? I, of course, need the job. Just can’t quit. Family to support and all that. What am I going to do?”

I told him simply that he needed to find the freedom and the means to express himself creatively. What was it he felt he wanted to do, creatively? He wanted to build furniture. He said he had ideas for unique pieces and he wanted to try those ideas out.

We explored this possibility. Did he have the tools? No. Could he afford to buy them? Yes. Would his family be on board with him taking some time to play with his ideas? He thought they would as they had several times remarked at how restless he seemed.

“But do I have the right to do this?” he asked. I asked him what he meant by “right.” He said it had to do with breaking the mold of always toeing the line as he had ben taught as a child. Then we got to the foundational problem.

Foundational problem? He was taught that happiness and the meaning of life were straight-jacketed into routine. His nurturing family did not believe in creativity. His father worked 40 years in the same job, for example. (Nothing wrong with that in itself.)

Yes, I said, you have every right to express yourself as you see fit. You are free to do that. Besides, I said, he could start in his spare time and see if it turned into a career where he was not stifled. Maybe it would be no more than an important hobby but some folks, I told him, definitely make a good living creating hand-crafted furniture.

Fred left the office beaming. You can be beaming too. Find what it is that expresses your happiness and do it. Starting today; starting now. You’ll be fulfilling the meaning of life.
